If I patch my .map files and overwrite the old ones with the patched ones, is it possible to play say Xbox Live with the non-modded map and LAN parties with the modded map? Any help would be appreciated!

You mean like switch back and forth between your normal map and modded map? Nope, you need to reload the map on your Xbox everytime.

is the .map file that i uploaded onto my PC remain intact if I use PPF-O-MATIC, or does it apply the patch to that particular file?

Ok, let me explain this to you in depth...

So, you want to patch a .map file, such as warlock.map w/ a ppf.

You simply open PPF0MATIC, and inside of that you open your warlock.map and ppf file. You then click "Patch" and PPFOMATIC patches your warlock.map w/ the ppf. So, once you have patched warlock, it messes w/ the size of the map, hence making it umplayable. So you need to do one more thing...

Now, once you have warlock patched w/ the ppf, you need to open Encryptomatic Signature and open up warlock w/ it. Then you just click Compress, or something of that nature, and it shrinks your warlock.map back to it's original size so you can then use it.

You will need to rip the contents of your Halo 2 game disc over to your PC, and look in the Maps folder. Or, if you have an upgraded HD, then you can DL Halo 2 to your HDD, and then FTP it over to your PC.

It's a good idea to have a set of all of the original maps saved on your computer, so you always have the originals right there and ready to mod.

two things:
1) i can FTP to my xbox only when splinter cell is in and i have loaded the Linux profile (EvoX dash). i want to FTP when Halo 2 is in so i can get a copy of it, how do i do that?
2) would it be possible to rip Halo 2 onto PC, then mod maps then write on to DVDRW and use it as a modded version of Halo and use the real disc as the nonmodded one for Live and stuff?

Ok, download Craxtion 4, and use the disc ripper option on it, that is how you get the game contents from your Xbox to your PC. When you are in your EvoX dashboard, you need to pop in your Halo 2 disc, and then use the program I mentioned above.

Here is a tutorial for that: http://teammodders.com/viewtopic.php?t=166

Yes, you can make just a multiplayer disc w/ all of your modded maps on it. here is a tutorial for that: http://halomaps.com/halo2mpcd.html

Well, I've never softmodded before, so I don't know why it would be resetting after you press the eject button.

You know, u can go to torrent sites and download the original Halo 2 maps. Or if your friend has a modded Xbox, just get the maps from him.
