I have a Sony DVD RW DRU 500A Burner, for some reason it won't recognize some of my DVD's. Hot Shots, Hot Shots Part Deux, and now Fever Pitch (maybe it just doesn't like baseball movies)to name a few. I have tried everything I can think of. Used a DVD Lens cleaner, cleaned the DVD, updated the Firmware. Ran a Diagnostic tool from Sony that says the Drive works fine. Closed all other programs. Still it just doesn't recognize these disks, it just says the drive is empty, please insert disk. Using Windows XP, Pentium 4, 1.80 GHz, 736 MB RAM. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If the movies it can't see are original dvds then it sounds like a drive problem. Maybe uninstall the drive in your device manager, reboot and let Windows reinstall the drive may help. If the movies in question are copies, then the problem may be the type of blank media they were burned onto that could be the problem. Some cheap media will degrade in about 6 months and won't play properly or not at all.

rodeh7,
Agree w/ Jerry746. You might d/l DVDinfoPro ( free and you can google for it) and do a CRC test of the burned media disk and see if there are any errors now on the disk. If there are then you need to re-burn the DVD's using better quality blank Media preferably Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden

No, these are all store bought DVD's. I've never had a problem with my copies once their burned. I can't get the drive (Sony DVD RW DRU 500A) to see these disks at all. not even to play them, much less burn them. Now the disks in question will play in my DVD player (player only) but not in my player/writer. I tried uninstalling the driver and letting windows reinstall on reboot but it didn't help.
Sony doesn't want to help me (without charge) because the Writer is 2 years old. It just T's me off. It's probably something simple enough. I mean I don't see anyone else having this problem.

rodeh7,
If these are the only DVD's it does this w/ then there might be a problem on the original DVD's. Usually when this happens you can not play any DVD's but you stated that these were the only ones that were giving you problems. The only other thing I can think of is the burner might be going bad w/ the laser needing to be re-calibrated. It would be cheaper to purchase another burner than carry it back to the shop to have them re-calibrate it.

Is that what happens when burners go bad? I have used the heck out of it for the last 2 years. Any suggestions on what new DVD Writer would be best to buy?

rodeh7,
There has to be something on the computer that does not like those movies. LOL If the test that Sony sent you to do states there is nothing wrong w/ the burner then it is something and that is why I suggested the laser could be off. This is one of those problems that might never get solved because there really is no correct answer for your problem.
As far as the burners- Plextor is good along w/ Pioneer and Nec but a lot of people like the lite-ons and Benq . The Nec's and the Lite-ons should be the least expensive. Just get a dual- layer burner that will burn both - and + blank DVD's
