I have some Verbatim Data Life Plus which were bought a couple of years ago. I think I bought them at best buy or office max. I don't have the original packaging but I know they were verbatim branded. The disk has a 1/2 blue and half silver background and on the left side of the disk it says DVD-R for General going in the vertical direction. On the right side it has Verbatim data life plus, below with the usual 4.7gb and disk symbol. The Verbatim and data life plus both have the copy write trade mark logo. Using DVD Identifier the code came back
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD-R:CMC MAG.]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD-R] - [DVD-R]
Manufacturer Name : [CMC Magnetics Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [CMC MAG.]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,298,496 Sectors = 4.71 GB (4.38 GiB)]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
inner ring media side numbers are GB00239
I noticed another set of numbers on the clear plastic lable side very inner hub ring that has RN217B02908GA which i suspect may be the blank plastic disk manufacture's id code.
I was just wondering if Verbatim still uses CMC MAG for data life plus or is that just some horrible experiment they tried a while ago and, (hopefully) learned their lesson since then? Do you have to look for made in japan or taiwan on the package? I know many of the senior members here recommend Verbatim Data Life + but hate CMC MAG a company that seems to lurk behind known good brand names of media. I hate the CMC MAGs also and was just checking my collection when I decided to check a "known good brand" and it came back as above. I don't think these are knock offs or fakes. Any update on current Verbatims would help. I looked at dogbombs post of media codes and none of them showed data life plus using cmags in the -/+R format. I currently use only known good Tys from japan for my computer and sony-r for my stand alone DVDR. Never again Memorex, Imation, or any other crap media.
BTW they backed up fine on Tys and play back fine. I ran a media PI/PIF on the verbatim/CMCs and they came back with the typical CMC mag crap signature on the test (didn't save file so i can't give you exact numbers). I backed them up using DVD Shrink and got no CRC errors during encoding.
Thanks and happy burning.. Oh, and I plan to check the local blockbuster and hollywood video dumpsters this weekend to check for "treasure"... :) Loved that thread.. I have a current tetnus shot.

Thanks binkie7. It must have been something verbatim tried a while ago and thought better of it. I know some of the non data life plus list CMC MAG but I didn't see that offending code on any of the latest code lists for data life plus.
I like the MCC codes also.
I bought those verb a couple of years or so ago and thought I was buying quailty media. They seem to be working fine with no pixilation or freezing but I am backing them up to Tys while the data is still there.

stick with the TYs you are using now...Verbatim used to use CMC MAG a LOOOOOOONG time ago, hence it is very accurate for you to say that you got them a few years ago~ :)
i always use TY media (naturally made in Japan), and the MCC coded Verbatims 8x/16x DVD+R (MCC003 and MCC004 respectively), both are GREAT medias~
as to looking for made in japan/taiwan on Verbatims, no need to...MOST Verbs are made in Taiwan, you don't need to dig through all the stacks of media nowadays when dealing w/ Verbatim (which is a good thing) :)
good luck on your future burns, check my sig...TYs and Verbs 4 LIFE~!

here's one i just resurrected as i'd not heard any more about these particular CMC coded Verbatims - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/214037#1300784
that thread links over to a cdfreaks thread - over there are lots of CMC advocates (which i find very odd as we here see sooooo many problematic logfiles with such utter rubbish media). Some of them seem to say that CMC are still making Verb discs, one guy even states that MCC/MKM don't manufacture 8x discs at all anymore. very confusing indeed, one of the reasons i don't hang out at cdfreaks too often. i choose the other evil - dissecting endless logfiles full of CMC discs. Funny how CMC are by far the most mentioned media in logfiles :)
i've used something like 1500 Verbs by now, mainly -R 8x, but quite a lot of +R 8x, and quite a few of the new Verb TY -R 8x. ps i've used from various stock, ie India, Singapore, Taiwan with no discernable difference

good to see you holding your Verbatim camp strong creaky~ :)
i've gone into GREAT detail as to my TY camp in THIS thread here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/234049
the way i look at it, as long as CMC MAG doesn't EVER start producing Taiyo Yuden discs, i'll be ok~ as long as TY keeps their production IN JAPAN, no need to really worry as to the quality of TYs holding their own...
it's good to see that well known companies such as Fuji and Sony are actually buying THEIR branded discs from Taiyo Yuden (8x DVD+R format for now and the RARE 8x DVD-R MADE IN JAPAN by Fuji is also genuine TYG02 coding)
but, with other companies, memosux is the first that comes to mind, they just HAVE to buy their media from the cheapest source possible...CMC MAG...yes, CMC MAG is a HUGE manufacturer of media and is known WORLDWIDE, they produce one of the HIGHEST SHEER VOLUME of media for many many companies out there.
i guess when people say, "you get what you pay for", this holds true from companies that buy from manufacturers as well~ :) it's a shame how it's the CONSUMER that gets screwed in the long run while memosux and CMC MAG are laughing their way to the bank~

I have several of those. Ironically they all still work very well. They load in my DVD player faster then just about anything I use.

Mine work fine too, but disk scans come back exactly as what you would expect to see with CMC mag disks. I am backing them up on tys now (fuji DVD+R made in japan 100% genuine tys). I also have some new verbatims and they don't code out as the junk stuff. Seems like verbatim went cheap before and may be doing it again according to some new thread warning about pearl white verbatims coming back as CMC mag manufactured. So far in backing them up, i havent ran in to any that I couldn't save, but did get a few CRC errors when trying to back up one of those verb/cmc mags. DVD Decrypter extracted it to HD and the new copy seems to be fine at the error point during playback.

yeah...i've been real lucky with my India verbs (still got quite a few tubs in stock), every now and then svp/ebuyer/whoever must sell out all their stock then find a pile at the back that are older stock, or i s'pose product codes on the tubs are the same, regardless of country of manufacture. in fact i'm pretty sure the tubs do have the same product codes. Come to think of it even the new Verb TY's have the same product code, i think it's 43475 or similar..
guess i'm just lucky, and believe me, i'd be shouting like a madman if i got some bad discs, i'll only sing the discs praises while they're working 100%.. (just added that in case anyone lurking thinks i push Verbs for the sake of it lol)
