I've been lurking and finding out all I could about DVD mfg's, codes, software, and hardware, but I haven't seen anything about any relationship of Disc rated speed to quality.
I have a Sony DRU800 16x drive. I understand burning at 4x makes better discs. But does getting an 8 or 16x disc and burning it slower make any difference than using a 4x disc and burning at 4x.
I found one article here (that I can't find again) about high speed CD media (48x etc.) with high errors even when burned slower. Does the technique of making a high speed disc make a better, worse, or similar disc as a slower one?
Thanks for your help
I wondered why the frisbee kept getting larger, then it hit me...

The 4x speed media is getting harder to find. The 8x speed in my opinion, seem to be better than all the 4x speed discs I burned, even at 4x and 2.4x actual burn speed.
Media quality is critical for dvd burning. Way more extreme than cd burning. Your quality really shows when you compress 7-8 gigs into 4.38 gb blank DVD-5 disc. That's why you want quality discs with the quality dye like taiyo yuden and verbatim data life plus.
Some go with burn half what the technology is. You have a 16x writer,as long as you have quality media,8x should be no problem. If there is,slow it down.
The problems usually occur on the stand alone players. They can be picky as to which format/speed it was burned/MID code of media/and even different burn programs. They are the ones that tell us how fast and what kind of dvd media they will play.
I,usually burn at 4x,and even 2.4x and absolutely no issues using quality 8x media. Excellent playback, and fewer errors at the reduced burn speed.
The crappy media will cause issues.Burn errors, throwing your dmas into pio mode. Stand alones can have a lot more trouble reading them. These have to be burned slower,at a reduced backup target, and still may not be usable.

i agree with everything saugmon stated, but, for ME PERSONALLY, i burn my 4x Taiyo Yudens @ 4x, my 8x Taiyo Yudens @ 8x, and my 16x Verbatims @ 8x~ :) yes, i do not recommend burning 8x rated media @ 8x, but i live on the wild side and with proven HIGH QUALITY TAIYO YUDENS, i see NO difference in picture quality on MY OWN individual setup :)
it's highly regarded as "Standard" to burn movies @4x here on AD, but, me and a FEW others have had nothing but success burning @ 8x on QUALITY blanks (Taiyo Yuden & Verbatims), that is just MY preference and MY experience with the faster burning.
the bottom line is: USE QUALITY MEDIA and depending on your computer/burner setup, the "good stuff" CAN be burned @8x as long as you are not multitasking and using up your computer's resources (memory-RAM) during the burn~ i STILL keep my 16x rated media burns down to 8x, but, that is only because i feel it NEVER necessary to EVER burn @16x...the chances of errors is far too high for me to shave a few minutes off my burning time~ :)
good luck~ just use the Good Media, and all should be well...check my sig. for what i consider the "good media"

I, too, burn my 8X rated TY's at 8X... The key, as mentioned earlier, is to use quality media. Scans done on my 8X burns were actually better than my 4X burns (same file, same media) on my 109 and my 1693S (same burner as your Sony)...

I think that the burning speed vs speed of the media and quality of the scans is at least partially dependant on your DVD writer. My Ricoh likes to burn at 4x and I get the best scans using 8x or 16x media .. Now my BenQ .. It gets the best scans burning at 8x (better than 4x) and doesn'y care if I use 2.4x, 4x, 8x or 16x .. It treats them all the same .. With the BenQ, I get the best scans using Verbatim discs with MIJ Maxell discs a close 2nd ... Surprisongly, the Ricoh gets better scans with the Sony media (both MIJ & MIT)
I have noticed that while using Solid Burn with the BenQ, I get better ecans after I've used the same media several times .. I guess that it 'learns' or something weird like that
