This is a minifaq for anyone who uses the Breaker Pro Modchip CD and a PS2 to play multi disc PSX games. A thorough Google search found little useful info on the subject. There are rumors and speculation on the subject, but little hard evidence. Most of the time this topic ends in someone making a snide remark to "get a modchip." This FAQ is dedicated to anyone who wants to play multi disc PSX backups or imports and doesn't have the time or money to install a modchip on their PS2. Anyone with useful information on this topic should feel free to post. I will start by compiling a list of multi disc games and whether or not it is possible to play them through with Breaker Pro and without a modchip. As it would be extremely time consuming to play through EVERY multi disc PSX game, large portions of this FAQ will be based on data from various FAQS on the net. My personal preference is toward RPG's so that'll be what comprises most of the initial list. Again if anyone has questions or comments feel free to post, this doesn't work with my input alone. That being said here is a general rule of thumb for playing multi disc games on your PS2 with the Breaker Pro modchip CD: If you can save at the end of the disc (e.g. would you like to save? at the end of disc X, then are prompted to insert Disc X) then you're okay because you can simply boot disc X with the Breaker Pro and play on as normal, however if you have to switch discs in midgame than that differs on a game to game basis, however it is likely there may be no way to play through the game without a modchip :(.

Initial Games List Playable w/o modchip: Crono Cross-no, Lunar the Silver Star-no, Lunar 2 Eternal Blue-no, Final Fantasy VII-yes, Final Fantasy VIII-yes, Valkyrie Profile-no, Final Fantasy IX-yes, Xenogears-no, Legend of Dragoon-yes, Tales of Destiny II (Tales of Eternia)-yes, Star Ocean 2:The Second Story-yes, Thousand Arms-no, Dragon Warrior 7-yes, Grandia-yes, Wild Arms 2-yes, Arc the Lad III-no Parasite Eve-no (thx LucKGhost). This isn't definite, if I am wrong about any of these games please post and let me know. I'll update the list frequently and hope (with your cooperation) to find a viable solution to play through games that require you to change discs in mid-game. I am getting a flip top lid for my v.4 PS2 today, so I will determine if that makes a difference and see if the "swap trick" that works on some multi disc PSone games is possible on the PS2. No progress in finding a working method to switch discs in mid-game. It looks more and more for games like Crono Cross and Valkyrie Profile that the only possible solution is to play them through on emulator or get a modchip. Well at least FF7-9 are playable thanx Square :)

Do you definately need a Breaker Pro mod chip or will any mod chip do?
I was wondering if you play a psx game in ps2 when you save do you need a ps1 memory card or ps2? or are all memory cards the same?
Thanks

To play PSX games on your PS2 you need a modchip or Breaker Pro. Any decent modchip will boot PSX backups on your PS2. Some of the better modchips include the DMS 4 Pro and Pro lite. You need a PSone memory card to save your data for a PS1 game. Breaker Pro isn't a modchip, it's a boot CD that allows you to play PSX backups or imports on your PS2. For more info on Breaker Pro check here: http://breakerpro.com/ For info on how to use it check here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/230987 Later.

Yes you have to buy it. A burned copy won't work. There are several vendors which carry it, just google Breaker Pro and you'll find one. I paid $15 for mine ($23 with shipping). It works great with like a %98 boot rate. You need to use it with a flip top http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop/page1.cfm or slide card http://www.saveware.com/SlideCardUsageAndInstall.htm I reccomend the flip top. Later.

Of course all the games you can't play thru are the good ones. Lunar series, Crono Cross, Valkyrie Profile, I'm gonna breakdown and get my old v.4 chipped. Thanx for the PE info. The only game I am not %100 certain of on this list is Arc the Lad III.

yeah... it sure seems like all the good ones are that way. I tried everything I could think of with PE to keep from using the original, but no luck. Maybe I'll get my old PS1 chipped just for such occasions.........Ya know it's funny ...I'm playing Star Ocean 3 from the HDD and it's 2 discs...scary....

Yeah LuckGhost I first thought off this being problem after backing up Chrono Cross. If you want to see if Star Ocean til the end of time is playable (any good by the way?) check gamefaqs.com Most of the FAQ's have it divided up by disc and will mention s/t about being able to save at the end of a disc. You're good on Star Ocean you can save between disks.

Yeah but if you have to swap discs in mid game you're screwed. You can't hit reset or you'll go back to the title screen. If you try switching backups via flip top it won't spin. If you try to use the disc tray to load your back up, well no need to addess that. Swapping Swap Magic when switching only ends up with the PS2 saying insert correct disk, as there's no way to access the swap magic menu when swapping in mid game. You can try hot swapping with an original while the PS2 initializes the copy protecton check, but that doesn't work either. I've read old wives tales of that working, but not from any credible source. All I got with FF8 was a scratched disk and sore fist from pounding my desk in frustration. So as I far as I know if you're playing a multi disc game that requires a mid game swap, there is no way to play on without a modchip. If you've misplaced or scratched up your originals well then your SOL. This is one instance I would love to be proven wrong. Anybody with something to add is welcome to post.

Yeah I saw that you can save on star ocean 3 this morning. I like the game ...lots of cinematics....

Also I was thinking someone should come up with some kind of PS1 multidisc loader, for use with Breaker pro, someway to pass the 2nd disc check...I guess... seem possible?

Yeah I thought about that too. I was thinking that when it's time to swap discs couldn't there be a method to go back to the boot menu and continue on. If your using a HD loader I don't see any reason why that couldn't work, as the game could temporarily hang out on the hard drive until the second check is bypassed by a boot disk or w/e. If your not using a HD loader I don't know how this would be accomplished though. If you're swapping discs and there was a way to access the boot menu in mid game swap, where would the game go? The older PS2's have no hard drive, so there would be no place for the game to be stored while accessing the boot menu during a mid game swap. This is over my head. I have no knowledge of programming and coding. So if anyone has theory about this, jump right in.
