Yeah, yeah, i know this topic is old news, really old news. And yeah, i also realized to check some of the old posts, but couldnt find a definite answer to my predicament.
Heres my situation: Got the non slim PS2, and i dont wanna open nor have anyone else open it up for modding.
Now all I want to know is, CAN SWAP MAGIC 3.6 PLAY BACK-UP/BURNED PS2 AND PS ONE GAMES? Secondly, do they have to be patched? Thirdly, do the ps2 games need to be burned with a specific brand media?
Yes you can play burned backups with SMD on the PS2. To play PSone backups you need a product called Breaker Pro, explained here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/230987 Breaker Pro plays Psone backups and imports with a comparable boot rate (around 90%) to SMD. You can purchase a flip top lid for the PS2 from a number of sites, as I do not wish to violate forum rules regarding advertising, simply Google it and a find a merchant you are comfortable with. Also make sure you match the flip top lid with the version of PS2 you have. You do have to open it to install the flip top lid (thereby voiding the warranty). You have to open it with most mod solutions however, of course you can always use the slide card and SMD magic combo for the PS2, shown here: http://www.saveware.com/SlideCardUsageAndInstall.htm The slide card isn't completely idiot proof, but as long as you follow the steps posted here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/230987 you will be fine. As for burning PS2 games, I believe I will let the experts at Afterdawn handle that one. For burning PSone games there are a couple programs which are useful, namely Alcohol 120%, Nero Burning ROM, and CDRWIN. I personally use Alcohol 120% because it is simple and effective. Set the datatype to Playstation, the write method to DAO/SAO, and the write speed as low as possible (no higher than 4x). This method works for me 90% of the time. There are only a handful of PSone games that are mod protected and need to be to patched. For a thorough listing check here: http://www.go.to/psxcplist Depending on who you ask the type of media you use to backup CD's and DVD's matters. Some people swear by Taiyo Yuden or Ritek CDR's, other's swear they are the worst thing since Sandra Bullock started making movies. The short answer is no (I use Memorex CDR's with no prob other than the occasional coaster), so try it out and figure out which works for you. As far as burning PS2 games, that is out of my area of expertise, but I know a number of old posts are devoted to that topic. There are two whole forums dedicated to backing up PS2 CD's and DVD's, so check em out. Take care and good luck.
