Searching these forums I see a few people have had problems backing up the Disney title "Spirited Away" without any resolves. Here's what's happening when I attempt to back up this title.
First, Dvd Shrink's first Analyising phase reads at normal Kbs but at only 7 FPS, (normally 150ish). After that's complete, either "Full Disk" or "Reauthor - main movie", "Automatic compression" shows only 87% compression but with slider maxed to the left. At this point the Dvd size meter is still in the red, oversized. The main movie is only 6gb, not to large to be compressed. Switching to manual compression and removing unwanted audio streams makes minimal difference to the 87% compression. In reauthor mode, when I drag the main movie title to the compilation window, Dvd Shrink begins to re-analyze the disc which isn't normal either.
With Dvd Shrink 3.2 not working with this disc I tried to rip the movie to my Hdd using Dvd Decrypter first. In either "File mode" or "ISO mode" dvd decrypter came up with an error that said something like this, "This Disc is not CCS protected but has encrypted files which is strange" "aquire encryption key?" "yes to all".
After that, it decrypts and takes as long as usual but, at every new vob file the log says that error, finds encryption key and continues. When it's done and opened with dvd shrink, basically everything except the main movie is there. It calls some 500mb special feature file the main movie.
Ok, so there's alot of words here. I suppose this problem comes down to an unusual protection. I used DVD43 aswell. If anyone has successfully backed up this title, how? Thanks.

I have this movie and i never watched it before. I saw your reply so I went to work. The DVD i have is a brand new one, never watched. Given to me as a gift.
Movie source; virgin
I put the movie in and DVD43 went to work not having a problem hacking it. Openend up DVD Decrypter and extracted files to HD. I got the same error as you and this occured on the last file of the movie.

sorry the resolution on that one isn't great.
I selected yes to all and I had my settings as per scubapete's guide.
Decrypter finished.
Tried to open the files in shrink and got this:

again the image is lower rez than what i wanted but it is late and i am fading fast...
my shrink gets overlaped I/O in progress error and i think it is on the first VOB file. Shrink dies..
Tried Nero Recode 2. It failed to open the files but i did notice we have a problem with multi-angles on this movie. 2 titles same length but different angles.
Tried DVD Cloner2 whole movie fit to one disk option. Looked like it was going to get it, but somewhere around less than half way thru analyzing it came up with a FAILED button and no reason why. I could have tried movie only option and may try that later, but yes you have found a very picky one. Strange that I never saw it mentioned here before as being some special problem to back up. The movie came out in 2001 so if there was something special preventing back-up, it should have been defeated by now.
Sorry i couldn't be of more help to you. I will work on this and get it backed up one way or another. Or someone who ran in to this long ago and forgot about it being a problem could post their fix. MaxBurn is now officially burnt out for the day.. or night in my case.

I am still looking in to this. I noticed that I had DVD43 running in the background when I used DVD Decrypter. According to this thread
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48842
you are not supposed to have DVD43 running when you extract files with DVD Decrypter or you will get errors in the final file output.
I will try it again with DVD43 turned off and see if that helps.

Here is why i got that overlapped I/O error. Under the settings i had checked off the enable overlapped I/O - this may increase ripping performance. They should have also said it can cause shrink to fail.. :(

uncheck that box if you get this error. I know it doesn't help fix your original problem, but i have to knock down these barriers when they come up.. :)

i tried a new rip on the movie with DVD43 turned off in the background. This time DVD Decrypter asked me about the drive region and wanted me to pick a region, so in my case i picked number 1. I can go back and change that later if it gives me any trouble. Decrypter went thru and extracted the files to HD in file mode. Then i tried to open shrink on the files and it refused because of invaild file or some other lame statement.. Went back to the digital-digest forum and started reading up on Shrink error codes. They have a nicely indexed site based upon Shrink errors and fixes found by members. http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=72cbbfc2f47455de...
I am in the process of trying those fixes. Have to run some errands but i will keep working on this.. oh they also have a list of known movies giving shrink problems and Spirited Away was not on that list.
*******
I can't beleive that Insaying and i are the only ones who ever tried to crack this movie.. ?? i mean, i will get it, but i am slow and methodical so it could take awhile. I am trying to do this with free programs, if possible so the fix wont cost anything other than time and brainpower figuring it out. Anyways hang in there Insaying..

I have this movie and will try to backup with Decrypter and Shrink tonight. I'll post back later with my results.

Quote:
The disc is not supposed to be protected by CSS/CPPM so this is somewhat strange!

Interesting, it says it's "not supposed" to be enrypted, yet somehow, it is. News to me. I'm wondering if maybe because of no more updates to Decrypter, that new batches of dvd's (at least for this particular movie) have been given "new" encryption that Decrypter can't recognize.

Anyone still have their free AnyDVD trial offer?

Perhaps asking 'creaky' how he managed it using Shrink.

I got this movie with DVD X Copy about over a year ago. Maybe you guys have a newer version of the movie (collectors edition or something, maybe even different region code than what I had).

I managed to get it. I used the cold burn method where you put the disk in the fridge for 30 minutes.. Naw just kidding :). (saw that in another thread and it had me rolling..:))
I was doing a couple things wrong.
1. The overlapped I/O message and the fix for that. (that will teach me to fall for the checking this box may improve things trick.)
2. DVD43 was running in the background. Seems like this was my main problem.
Also you do not need to use DVD Decrypter on this, if you are using the latest version of shrink. In fact the files i extracted using decrypter came up completly different and unuseable than using this method. Like creaky posted in that link ((@attar Thanks, that post linking to creaky's easy crack of it, made me sure i was doing something wrong.)) and thanks to Konfused1, squizzle, for joining in.
I was following some of the fixes listed in the other forum i linked to when i thought i would try again without using the extracted files to the HD but just letting shrink open the disc.
It worked. Here is why i think DVD43 was causing the conflict:

see where it says encryption status? Before it said not encrypted.
Here are the results when shrink opens the disc.

@Insaying, My suggestions would be to make sure you have the latest vers of shrink. It is availible here under the software tab above.
Turn off DVD43 or close it. You don't have to uninstall it or anything like that. While your at it, close down anything else not needed. Open disk with shrink and you should get something like the last picture. From there just hit the backup button and it should take you to the option screens. It worked for me. I backed it up with no problems and it plays back fine. Looks good even at that compression setting. I checked the deep analysis button, and the adaptive error compensation. It took longer but seems to be worth it.
I guess i had been using DVD43 in the background and shouldn't have, and it took the combination of this movie and extracting files to HD, and using shrink again, to cause a problem. I dunno fur shure.. but whatever i did to correct this, it worked for me.
Post if you continue to have problems.. You may put me down on the list of those who backed this up successfully, i wouldn't say without problems, but i learned something. Now on to more burning..:) May your lasers fire brightly..

well, all looks good now, guess i got in too late.
but speaking of keeping the lasers bright !!!!

always always remember to use a good power supply, if not two !!
more power = better burns !! ............ (ok thats false, but it was in another thread somewhere and it fit right in here)

Thanks for your prompt help with this! It works! I dunno why I didn't try disabling DVD43 before, seeing as some of the trouble I've had with DVD43. Ever try burning a "CD" with DVD43 running?? Don't, your pc will restart. I realize most movies don't require DVD43. I think the only movie I've actually needed it for was my Matrix trilogy, and that may have been with an older version of DVD Shrink. You said something about DVD Shrink 3.2 not needing DVD43? Do you think DVD43 makes any compatability differences in movies it does work with?
Thanks again for your time investigating this. You Good!
Sorry 'bout the initial "double post"

@Insaying, I am glad it worked for you too :). I like helping out if i am able, and frankly i had fun with this challenge and playing with images..You know I made many a back-up with both DVD43 and Shrink being used in conjunction with each-other and never had a problem thru the whole burn process including testing playback in several different DVD players and recorders. I would think the ones ripped with Decrypter will work ok but you might want to check them again just to be on the safe side. I didn't get a snapshot of the first file opening when DVD43 and DVD Decrypter were used and then opened by DVD Shrink, but i remember the file size being red, and the main menu having two movies with different angles.. None of that came up when shrink alone attacked the movie. Weird stuff.. Good luck in your burning adventures..

Sorry to chime in so late folks, I didn't even get a chance to try and burn the movie last night. Moot point, since MaxBurn found a solution.

In any event, I'm glad all ended well.

Happy Burning!!!
