Well, some of my worst fears have come true. In Febuary of 2003 (I think) I burned a bunch of movie of cheap Starlogic DVD-R's. Dirt cheap at the time, but they burned great. I've always been paranoid about them going bad, and I should have payed attention to a few early DVD's burned with Family guy episodes that started going bad...I ripped a few of them, with some errors, and made copies on Verbatims. Well today when I tried playing on of my first burned movie, Pirates of the Carribbean, the movie froze halfway through in my standalone philips (which is going back...another story). This movie also froze at about the same point on both my DVD-rom drive and my DVD-RW drive. I can't copy/paste or rip these files off in any way. I eventually found out all my Starlogic burned media have gone bad to some extent, in reverse proportion to how long ago they were burned...the last Starlogic used half the last few minutes corrupted. What makes me want to cry is that of my 70 or so burned movies, half are starlogic...and, keep in mind that it takes 4 or so hours to encrypt/burn a movie, that's a lot of time and money down the drain.
---Sorry for the long rant, but just warning y'all that DVD media which may burn fine and play fine for awhile may eventually go bad...then again this was cheap media. Hope the Verbatims I've been using lately fare better!

it's good to hear personal experiences on here with bad/cheap media, look on the bright side, at least you have learned and have since changed your ways (it's better NOW than later, believe me, i have thousands of backups and if i were using CMC MAG crap back in the days, i would be crying like a waterfall at this point) :)

im sorry you had to learn the hard way, but, now you KNOW, knowledge is power~ stick to the Verbatims and you should be just fine...even try a few Taiyo Yuden if you feel like it...i highly recommend BOTH those brands of media~ :)

burn on my friend and welcome to AD~ :)

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

What set-up are you using? Have you tried ripping them with DVDDecrypter?

i overlooked that part. i only ever do movie-only, and rarely do anything episodic.. however nost discs take 15mins to encode, a few take 20 or 30 mins, but burning to dvd at the proverbial 4x only takes 15mins top, so for normal movies, it should only be half hour per movie on average, sufficient PC not withstanding...

Ditto, creaky.... DVD-RB/HCEnc doesn't quite take 4 hours on the 2 1/2 to 3 hour movies...

I use DVDdecrypter/DVDshrink, pentium 2.4, and it can still take over 4 hours to encode and burn...I usually only burn at 2x, but honestly its the encoding that takes a good number of hours, and I'm not sure why.

Not to change the subject, but I recently got a Philips DVP642 dvd player...and it skips on the Verbatim DVDs. Funny thing, it could play every brand but the Verbatims, including the cheap Starlogics, which of course don't play anymore. I'm wary of spending money on a DVD player which can only play some DVDs, and I'm almost considering finding a cheap computer to use as a DVD player...computer drives seem to play EVERYTHING

Using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shring using deep analysis and adaptive error compensation takes me about 2 hours maximum ... Using ICOPYDVDs2 takes about 25-35 minutes

Also, my Phillips doesn't seem to have any problems playing Verbatim discs, that's the brand I use the most ..
