question about swapping a hdd from a modded xbox to a non modded one.

Ok I had a mod chipped xbox for a ahwile but the power stopped working in it so I bought new xbox. When I finally got some more money I bought a replacment power for my old mod chipped 1.6 xbox and I installed it. I had taken my mod chip out and sold it to someone else when my modded xbox died. Now when I turn the used to be modded one it does the christmas lights on me ( turns on 3 times flashing green and red lights) and I was wondering if there was a way to fix that without getting a new mod chip or if I could swap it with my non modded xbox softmod it and still and swap it again and still be able to xbox live on one and then when I wanted to play backups or homebrew to swap out the non modded hdd and put the softmodded in. Btw my working non modded xbox was made in feburary 2004
