Greetings,

I have been backing up movies quite some time on various media including verbatim, memorex, and ridata. I just noticed that on my memorex discs that I have burned onto, they say 4xRW. The disc itself is an 8x DVD+R. Is it possible to rw-write onto this dvd like a cd-rw? Also, my current stack of Ridata discs are 16x DVD+R's and on the cakebox that they came in, there is a small logo that says "RW". Are these dvds re-writable?

I am totally confused about this because i have purchased media that is all DVD+R but yet the "RW" logo appears on all of the media!

thanks for the help!

ALL DVDs have a small 'RW' logo printed on them. This does not mean that the disc is rewritable. Now if the disc has +RW or -RW printed on it instead of +R or -R that means that it is rewritable .. (Also, if the disc has purple dye, it's not rewritable)

Just like catfreak said. All the DVD discs have a RW embossed on them and that stands for Read/Write. Which is different than re-writeable. The +/-RW discs are more expensive also. If you ever do get some DVD-RW discs you can use them for test burns. It takes a lot to make them in to coasters.
They must have put those RW on the discs just to confuse all of us as I noticed those RWs a few months ago and figured out what they meant by it. Thats my opionion and i am sticking with it..:)

I've seen it on ebay. A seller listing fuji +rws, because it had that itty bitty rw logo on it when they were actually +r 8x. The plus 8x rw's haven't hit the market at that time!!!
It took 3 tries to reply to seller, but finally convinced him/her to list them as +r's- which the picture showed clearly.Quite a big price difference between 50 +r's and 50 +rws.

It's not on all media, just majority of it.I've got some Maxell dash 1x-8x backups here with no RW logo.

Make sure you see the large lettering DVD + RW/DVD + R/ DVD -R/ or DVD - RW. That little RW logo will usually be all by itself.

Thanks for the replies, it was confusing the hell out of me. i'm not sure why they bother to put the RW on there at all. If they do think it's neccessary to have it on there they should at least make it look different than the rewritable logo. Oh well, thanks for the help!

Here's an easy way to find media without that little rw logo to confuse you. Printable media: The silver shiny media from taiyo yuden is excellent. No writing whatsoever.Great to write on it with sharpies. Also the inkjet printables, but they are more expensive.

Just a thought you may consider.
