Download a program called videotoolbox. (download.com). open the file up in this program and it will tell ya the video format. A .AVI could be compressed to say something like DivX. VideoToolBox will let ya know.

Good Luck

Here is a link to download video tool box.http://tucows.menanet.net/preview/348572.html I just started using bit torrent and I have found most video's are Mpeg4. You may just need to go donwload the XviD mpeg4 codec from here=XviD.org/downloads.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.XviD.org/downloads.html

After istalling codec you should be able to open files using windows media player.

Good Luck

First of all: this is not a RIPPING problem, and as such I do not think your question belongs here.

Second: there is a solution to your problem and its called a codec. You need the right codec (coder-decoder) to be able to play the files.

A tip for you: you should download the K-Lite codec pack from this site: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Get the K-Lite codec Pack Standard since it contains everything you need to play all the commonly used formats. This package should be enough for the average user.
