I have a modded PS2..Magic V if I'm not mistaken and...mine does not accept DVD+R...it only reads -R and a select few brands...It reads PRINCO (alot of compusa dvds are princo) which everyone says is crap but it reads them...problem is down the line those princos started giving me trouble ( have to keep resetting the ps2 for them to read after about 3 tries they read..).....everyone loves Taiyo Yuden ( Fuji's made in Japan are normally Taiyo ) and Verbatim....in my case my PS2 will not read them at all...mine seams to love el cheapo discs...oh..REAL ritek works on my PS2 very well...try the Ritek white tops from maybe rima.com .. I don't like meritline..supermediastore is ok...I prefer rima.com or newegg... Now for store bought stuff...I have not had much success with any brands....Memorex, Maxell etc...all are junk on my ps2....Oh another brand that my PS2 likes but you can't find in a store is PRODISC...its just not very good on my regular dvdplayer...but the ps2 reads em...Hope this helps some...

Sony media is usually good stuff. I would at least try them and if they don't work most places will take them back even after their opened. If the sony's don't work try some verbatums. Key to burning games is burn them as slow as possible.

Sony media is very good on their 1x-8x speed media. Thank goodness their 1x-4x and 4x speeds are nearly extinct. Try to get the sony 1x-8x that say made in Japan on the label. Taiwan also makes sony, but for the same price-you can get the japanese discs.
What brand name and model # of burner you got?
Hey mort81, Hows the booktyped game backup discs fair in those ps2's?
I've played my booktyped dvd-rom movie backups in quite a few ps2s,but I haven't tried any games. Just curious if you have.

Just to clarify one thing.....I don't think Verbatim, Sony, Taiyo are bad.....I just kind of feel...what's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander....My ps2 will not read any of those brands and maybe jmi's won't either.....what I am doing now is buying a sampler pack of dvd-r's at $10.00 plus 3 for shipping...I know this is alot per disc...but I figure at least I get many types to figure out what is best and then I will get those...until they change ID or something...but I know its important to consider data life etc....my advise to you jmi is to figure out what works good for your burner and your ps2...I have spent alot on shipping back and forth buying brands people recommended....and then they sucked on my burner and Ps2
Now if you bought those Sony's at a local store...just find out their return policy..many stores allow you to return cake boxes you opened and even burned a few. Then I would go ahead and try them since they are supposed to be pretty good.....and if you want a sample pack...supermediastore and rima offer them...I am getting one from rima ( I prefer them ) and I will let you know how things go and whats in the pack...

saugmon,
I don't do games so really don't know 1st hand. I'm just going by what I've read and good media for movie backups from experience. I should have said the sony's work well for movie backups but I don't know about games. I would give them a try.

According to my understanding, any PS2 console from version 4 - current is capable of reading/playing both good quality DVD-R/+R backup disc period. I have a version 9 PS2 console and mine loves both -Rs and +Rs dearly, however, I prefer the DVD+R over any DVD-R. And yes.... I have "book typed" the majority of my PS2 games as DVD-ROM, and as much as I hate to repeat myself, but yeah...they're flawless.
Evidently, "book typing" is cruisin' deep inside my burner and perhaps that's just my style of burning regardless if it's dvd movies or PS2 games - it's all the same formula.
