AVI properties:
Video : 586 MB, 1937 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 960*544 (16:9) XVID
Audio : 116 MB, 384 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 5 channels, AC3 DVM

I want to be able to produce a DVD from this file using a DVD authoring package.

How / what software do I use to end up with an MPEG file (maximising quality and retaining 5 channel audio) which I can then use as the input file for an authoring package?

I've tried womble (sound disappears) - Main Concept MPEG Encoder (end up with stereo not 5 channel) - CCE doesn't like the 960*544 - help!!!

Thanks (in anticipation)

resize it to 720x480.
no need to reencode the audio. use the AC3 for audio. Demux it.

how to resize ?
well i use avisynth.
so it would be
lanczosresize(720,480)

You can use "Virtual-Dub" to Demux the Dolby AC3 audio File and "BeSliced" to Fix the AC3 files header(Virtual-Dub ripps the AC3 audio with a Wav header so "BeSliced" will fix the header)

then you can Load the AVI File into Virtual-Dub and use the Resize filter to properly resize the Resolution to DVD Resolution (720x408 with a 36 Pixel Boarder on top and Bottom to make up the 720x480 resolution)..

Then Frameserve the File to your encoder Like "CCE SP" and encode it to 23.976fps with 3:2 Pulldown which will make it 29.976fps...

after encodeing to a M2V Video file you Load it and the Dolby AC3 audio file into a DVD Authoring program Like "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" and add your menu"s and Chapters and author the Files to DVD....

Doing this is Quite easy and you will retain the Dolby 5.1 and if you set up the encodeing Correctly in CCE SP the Video quality will be Very Good....

If you need anymore help Let me Know.....
