dma is...
Dvr-ao9xl pioneer 16x dual layer
Updated firmware to 15.8 latest version
system registry clean
system free of sypware and viruses
media - philps 1-8x or meomorex 16x
nero 6.6 or soemthing like that

i can only burn at 4x still when i go any higher, nero
just crashes out

is it the media? my system to slow ?

i jsut wanna make it a litlle faster 6x-8x when backing up my movies

media prob...both media brands you mentioned are IN MY OPINION, crap media~ :) both philips and memorex use CMC MAG as their manufacturer~ get better media and your speed will increase. i too have the pioneer dvr-109 (but i use modified firmware), but before i did so, i realized it was VERY picky about crappy media, it would not play a memorex burn that i had made on another of my drives AND would not burn to a simliar blank memorex disc when i tried initially~

check my sig. for GOOD media suggestions~ good luck

forgot to mention...make sure ur pioneer is in DMA mode~ good chance it MIGHT have reverted back to PIO mode, hence the slow burns~ :)

yes must agree with what the Doc says
whats the hurry. the faster you burn the higher the chances of errors
i have found that 4x max for quality burns is the way to go regardless of the speed rateing of the media

I agree with both kivory666 and gurnard on this case about using crap media or low quality media. However, you might still need to verify that both of your DMA is "ON" and "available" instead of "PIO Mode." If you're using Windows XP, then check on your DMA by following the few steps below. By the way, your current Pioneer burner's firmware is 1.58 - go here and have a look http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2016 or check to see if you have the latest.

((( To check your DMA Mode if it's On/Available or Off/PIO Mode)))

1) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
2) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
3) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
4) double left click on either "Primary" or "Secondary IDE Channel"
5) click on "Advanced Settings," both Device 0 & Device 1 should says: Transfer Mode: DMA if availabe, and Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5 (or 4).
6) if you see any "PIO Only" on any of the "Transfer Mode," then you need to click on "Driver" and "uninstall" it.

((( To enable DMA back ON by "uninstalling" it's driver ?for Win XP users? )))

A) on "DESKTOP" right click on "MY COMPUTER", left click on "PROPERTIES"
B) left click on "HARDWARE", left click on "DEVICE MANAGER"
C) left click on + sign of DVD/CD-ROM Drives
D) double left click on your DVD burner or your dvd-rom drive
E) left click on "DRIVER", left click on "UNINSTALL", you will see a "Warning: you are about to uninstall this device from your system," just click "OK", now "SHUTDOWN" or "restart" your computer
F) once you restart your computer, Windows should automatically detect your DVD burner?s drive and re-install it for you. That's it...easy as smoking!!

NOTE: do these steps only if the above process failed to bring DMA back on, or you can do exactly like the above steps, except this time you "uninstall" it from the ?IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers?

(A) left click on + sign of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
(B) double left click on either Primary or Secondary IDE Channel (NOTE: you have to know where your "DVD Burner" or "DVD-ROM drive" is installed to what Channel). Usually it's the "Secondary IDE Channel" because your "C: drive or Hard Drive" would be the main aka Primary IDE Channel already. If you're not sure, then you need to check it with "Nero Toolkit" first before you "uninstall" any of them. Once you verify with Nero Toolkit, then you can continue with the next step.
(C) click on "DRIVER", "UNINSTALL", "OK" and then "shutdown" or "restart" your computer. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

NOTE: To verify your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers with Nero:
Open up "StartSmart", click on "Nero Toolkit", then click on "Nero InfoTool" (InfoTool will run and retrieve all drivers), now click on "Configuration" - this should show you where your DVD Burner/DVD-ROM is installed under either Primary or Secondary <--- make good note of that and you're ready to "uninstall" your dvd burner/dvd-rom drivers now.
