I'm not sure if this is exactly the right place for this, but I couldn't find a better location on the boards. *Mods feel free to move if in the wrong area*
I was wondering if anyone could point out which software to use and which settings to use on it for making working backups of PSX/PSone(i.e. the original Playstation) games that will be playable on a modchipped Playstation and/or PS2.
Most of what i've seen for instructions seems to apply mostly to PS2 games, so i'd like to check to make sure I'm doing it right before I endup with a stack of coasters. Thanks in advance!

I've always used Clone CD for PS1 games... It works good. I think it's still in the software section of this site, but it's like a 30 day trial or something......

Clone CD does work great for ps1 backups, mainly because it can burn them at 1x, which is nice. Here is a tutorial for you...
Clone CD v4.x.x.x
Getting the ISO onto your computer
1) Put in your ps1 disc in your computer drive.
2)Open up Clone CD and click the "Read to Image File" button on the left hand side.
3) Select the drive your Ps2 disc is in and click "Next"
4) Click "Game CD" then "Next"
5) Browse and pick where you want to put the image file and then click "Ok"
6) The image file will then be created along with a .sub and .ccd file.
Writing the ISO to a disc
1) Go back or open up Clone CD and click the "Write From Image File" button.
2) Browse and find the .ccd file that you created and double click it, click "Next"
3) Choose the drive your blank CD is in and click "Next"
4) On this screen make sure the "Write Speed" is set to 1x and make sure the "Game" icon is chosen, click "Ok" and that's it!

I personally never cared for CloneCD, but as the 2 replies outrank a lowly junior member, to each his own lol. I use Alcohol %120 to back up my PSX games. I set the data type to customize, the read speed to 1x and the write speed to 4x (the lowest my writer supports) and I check read subchannel data from current disc, ignore read errors and fast skip error blocks (not every writer supports this function) and click next. This will create an mdf an mds file (image files created with Alcohol or DVD encrypter). To burn the image you need set to the data type to playstation, the write speed low (no faster than 4x) and the write method to DA0/SAO. This method worked for me about %90 of the time. Feel free to use whichever method you prefer, I'm just telling you what works for me. Good luck!

Yes, Alcohol 120 is a good program for burning ps1 backups, as I used it frequently to burn all of my ps1 games. Most of the time they played great on my modded ps1. The reason I switched to Clone CD down the road was because it allows you turn burn at 1x, and the slowest I was able to burn on Alcohol was 8x. My ps2 had troubles reading games burned at anything above 4x because of my cheap modchip (duo2se). And yes, it was a modchip problem, and not a laser problem, because my friend and I swapped mobo's once, and he had the DMS4Pro chip installed on his, and the ps1 games that were burned at 8x worked perfectly on my ps2 then.
So, that's why I made the jump from Alcohol 120 to Clone CD. I do use Alcohol 120 to burn all of my DVD based ISO's, whether it be for Xbox or Ps2.
donkeema, you can use 700MB discs...

Dipset I don't know if you are referring to PSX or PS2 games, but here's how it works with for the PSX: Open Nero Burning ROM (not quick start or express). I'm assuming you are using Nero 6. Go to Recorder--> Copy Disc. In copy options select your recorder and set the read speed to 1x. In read options check everything except use jitter correction and set fast copy settings to user defined. In burn select write, set the write to speed to no higher than 4x, and the write method to Disc at once. Click copy, it should be done in around 20 mins or so. You might wanna mount your .nrg file on a virtual drive and boot on it an emulator to make sure it copied okay (or you can skip this step and copy it straight to disc). Insert your blank disc and set the write method to disc at once and the write speed no higher than 4x. Click burn and your backup should be ready in 20 mins or so. I backed up FF7 like this, before I started using Alcohol for my backups. It works fine so I assume you won't have any problems if you follow these steps. For info on burning PS2 games check here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/117975 Good luck.

Thanks for all the great information. I'm attempting my first backup with CloneCD 4.x at the moment. Hopefully all will go well.
I realize that by modern standards, original PSX games are a bit dated, especially in the area of eye candy. However, I do honestly enjoy a great many of the original PSX/PSone games still. To me, Final Fantasy 7 is still one of the best RPG's ever made.
Since some PSX games are getting quite rare to find replacement copies of, I really appreciate the info on how to help protect them from being lost forever.

Is it possible to burn a Multidisk PSX on a DVD? I've been searching around and I havn't seen anyone where it says you can't do this.
I got to see FF7 advent children the other day and I wouldn't mind going through the story you know... I wasn't into RPGs back then. Anyways, I know how to make multi-disk cds, but i'm pretty sure that these games take up the whole cd, so that isn't really a possiblilty.
I have a Matrix Infinity, and the specs say it has multi-disk support, but i don't know if that included DVDs.

I had made a post about this some time back, but what would really be nice is for someone to make a PSX emulator for PS2... It sounds stupid i know, but it would really be a good idea. If there was a PSX emulator, then we could play PSX games on HDLoader.
I don't think it would be that hard either. We would just need HDD support and maybe a seperate app that could rip games to partitions on a HDD. Or better yet, an all in one app that could play PSX games, rip games to their own appropriate size partitions and browse for the games in that are added in a table of contents.
All the hardware is there to be used, so how hard could the emulation be. As soon as i'm done with my classes, i wouldn't mind starting on a project like that.

Hi everybody! Sorry to bother you with this, but I'm at my wits end. Tokijin, thank you for your assistance, maybe you can help me again? You suggested that the best method for me to burn my Castlevania: SOTN backup was to use Alcohol 120% and the settings: playstation / DAO/SAO / 4x. However, if I choose DAO/SAO, it automatically checks the "rectify subchannel data" -box, and it cannot be unchecked. I'm currently testing these settings anyway, but I have a bad feeling in my gut :/
My specs were: PS2 (PAL, older version, bought last year) and Breaker Pro ver 1.1.
By the way, does it matter which version of Alcohol 120% I'm running? Also, you mentioned that most burners cannot replicate the 'bad sectors' in PSX-discs; is there a specific burner I should get? Mine's LG RW/DVD GCC-4480B
Again, thanks for your help and patience!

It worked! Please ignore my previous message, and again, I sincerely thank you for your help! Anyway, I have one additional problem: the game won't recoginze my memory card! Well, I'll try to find an answer to this problem from another thread, if you think it's not appropriate to discuss it here :o
Anyway, thank you!

Glad to hear it worked SOTN is one kick arse game. As far as your memory card, do you have a PSone memory card? You can't save PSone data on a PS2 card.

The datatype needs to be set Playstation. Check the guide for Alcohol already posted in this thread: I personally never cared for CloneCD, but as the 2 replies outrank a lowly junior member, to each his own lol. @ toxicFish : Try the SEARCH next time
Thanks for educating me on the SEARCH feature for the forum, but you are wasting your keystrokes. The link you gave me doesn't even say how to burn a multigame DVD. The guy who responded to the question gave some asinine answer also.
I did not ask how to make a multigame PS2 DVD. I asked if it was possible to make a multigame PSX DVD. This thread is about PSX backups isn't it...? If anyone does know, I'd appreciate the help.

Yeah there is a program called craxtion (I think) that allows you to burn multiple games to a DVD. Find out more here: http://www.craxtion.com/ Now can you play more than one game that's burned to DVD? I don't know, never used it.
