Ever since i have reformatted my pc and installed a new hd, video playback has been jerky at irregular intervals, it'll be fine for ten minutes or so, then the picture and sound will freeze up for a couple of secs then resume, having missed all the video inbetween. I dont really know if this is a problem that is just for xvid playback, as xvid is all i really watch. I have tried installing ffdshow, reclock used vlc and tried with wmp and the latest stable xvid release.

Anybody experienced this or know of a fix? Any help is appreciated.

VLC uses a built in decoder, so if it is also effected then the problem isn't with decoders. Are you sure it only effects XviD encoded files? In VLC XviD, DivX, etc. are all decoded by the same libavcodec decoder.

As for the latest XviD stable release, I'd go with a current cvs head build over it.

thanx for your reply celtic_d, i sort of already outruled codec issues as it continues to skip after alot of different codec and playback combinations. I think this may be something to do with my hdd. Does anyone know about cache and access modes? I looked in my bios and had a tinker but with no success. The funny thing is i have two hdd's in my pc, a 60GB and a 160GB, and the playback is the same when played off each drive. I know my pc is capable of playing these files flawlessly as it did so before i reformatted. I have also tried using the drivers i was previously using for my video card (geforce 4 mx440) and this made no changes either.

If someone could help it would be much appreciated.

yeah dma is enabled on both my hard drives. I think it may be a conflict with my antivirus, will uninstall it and see if it makes any changes.

also check that all your video card drivers are up to date you can get a free scan at drivershq.com or search for drivers from the manufacturer if you know what card you have. It would be a good idea to check all your drivers.
