For some reason, divx and xvid files suddenly stopped working on every video playback programs, EXCEPT for media player classic. GSpot confirms that all required codecs for playback are installed.

BSplayer, Viplay, WMP, Windows Media Center...they all give generic error messages, or simply fail immediately. Just a few days ago, I didn't have any problems.

I don't understand why Media Player Classic has no problems, while every other program chokes. OGG files encoded with mpeg4 work fine on all video players.

So it seems to me I am having a configuration problem, but I haven't the slightest idea how to fix it. I have tried installing and uninstalling ffdshow, xvid and divx codecs with no success.

I think the problem started when I installed the latest service pack for Windows XP MCE, but since this is a required update for me, I can't roll back.

No such thing as an MPEG-4 ogg file. You must mean ogm. The fact that it works suggests to me that it is a splitter problem, since an ogm would use the same decoders as an .AVI, .mp4, .DivX or whatever. Other possibility is the mp3 audio. MPC includes an internal AVI splitter and mp3 decoder.

Try mplayer or VLC. Neither relies on installed codecs/filters.

Yes, what you are saying sounds right. I did try VLC earlier today and that worked fine as well.

I would really like to fix this problem though. This is a MCE2005 box, so not being able to view mpeg4 using MCE or using a remote control means that I have to juggle more applications, which is messy.

I looked at mplayer, but it's a commandline player (?), which is no good for this computer. VLC doesn't respond to the remote control at all.
I guess I'll try doing some research into splitter problems.

mplayer as far as I know does support remotes. You can browse the OSD menu via it, define buttons for volume, etc. Media Player Classic also supports remotes.

My poiny of suggesting them was more to see whether it was a codec/filter issue or not.

In Media Player Classic, disable the AVI splitter. Does the file still play ok?
Disable the mp3 decoder. How about now?

I fixed it! Thanks so much for the help.

I didn't know I could selectively disable codec/filters. That would have been a better way to troubleshoot my problem. I ended up first overwriting the mp3 decoder, which didn't help. Second, I installed AviSplitter.ax and that fixed the problem.

Oh, Media Player Classic seems to support only some of the remote control buttons. It could just be a matter of configuring it properly, though.
