I've never been able to get ripping speeds close to 16x, they normally stay around 5-6x. I wonder what would happen running in safe mode with no programs open? Or wouldnt the right drivers load?

that doesn't matter. most manufacturers lock the rip speed on dvd-video at 2x, some do 4x and 6x. a typical dvd-rom can still be read/ripped at 16x or so. you can do it faster if you can find a cracked firmware for your burner, but why risk it? the slower you rip, the better the copy will be.

The quality really doesnt matter much does it? At least when you rip DVDs..I dont mean encoding or anything, I know there time is...better picture.
Auslander, that link in your profile, to feed an animal or w/e does that actually work? Because my sister goes to that site everyday, and I was convinced it didnt do anything (although theres no harm in doing it)

yeah, it leads you right to a little button that you click, and it gives .6 bowls of food and some care to a little homeless critter.

when you click the button, it takes you to a page of ads. companies pay the site every time the ads are viewed, and the site uses the money to help the animals.

i do ALL my ripping from a cd burner/dvd-rom combo drive to save wear on my dvd burner. it's even in a belkin usb enclosure. 99% of my stuff i do movie-only, which equates to 15 mins for most discs. some take 40mins max ie that particular disc rips at 2000kbps, but i guess most stuff rips for me between 5000kbps and 8000kbps, sometimes even 11000kbps. i sometimes use my (internal) dvd burner to rip, that averages i guess between 5000kbps and 8000kbps.
and lately i've had both burners Shrinking stuff at the same time, on average both drives were ripping two movies (in parallel) in 15mins flat. again, the odd disc takes 40mins max but for me they're generally all real quick

cpu data screen? are you trying to tell him to overclock his system, aawlittle? i don't think that's necessary.
MultCopr, if you're sure your compie settings for your drive controllers are set to DMA and not PIO, you're free of spyware/virii, you've defragmented your drive, the discs are clean, and you're not running much else while ripping, all i can think of is a firmware update for your drive.
