This is a problem regarding my Playstation 2 game console, and I'm hoping there is some kind of easy fix to this. If not, then I'm in some serious trouble.

Ok, look, PS2 has been driving me out of my freakin' mind for the past couple of months, but this problem is annoying yet completely mysterious to me.

FOr some reason, plugging a controller into the 2nd player jack has absolutely no effect. Strangely enough, pressing the analog button causes the red light to glow, but the second player joystick does nothing, therefore multiplayer games are henceforth impossible to ever play again.

Not that I haven't tried everything under the sun. I first tried removing the entire memory card/controler jack piece and replacing it with another one (from my old broken one, which I use for spare parts in a pinch) and I only ended up with the same results. Then I thought of buying a new controller, which I did, and nothing happened. So then I thought I would just bypass all that mess entirely and buy a multitap. For some reason, even when plugged into the fully functional 1 player port, the multitap can only let the first player enjoy the game. The only thing that I have no tried yet is buying another ribbon cable, and I'm hoping there may be some way to not have to do that. Especially if I buy one and it ends up being entirely useless. And I really don't want to buy yet another ps2 game console. That would be the third one I've wrecked in 3 months, but this one that I am currently trying to play with actually came to me like this. It was used. I really don't know what to do.

My suggestion would be to send it back to sony, with a list of defects, and have them fix it...

i second Daniel's idea. this sounds more serious than you could really fix without the producer's help.

Yeah, it would be great if I could just do something as simple as that, but it's not that easy. Check this out.

I had to tear the disc drive out because otherwise the disc would keep grinding against the plastic when it tried to play. The only way it would work is by tearing the thing out and sticking it directly on the rubber, and then putting something on top of the Playstation so that the air would circulate. It was pretty damn broken when I bought it, but now it looks like an absolute inside-out wreck. Well, it was really cheap. Anyway, Let's just say that the Playstation's warranty is very voided. Sending it back to Sony is not an option. Also, it's far past the expiration date as it is.

I already bought a new ribbon cable, that should arrive in 2 to 5 days. That should work, I think. The one I already have is actually a little bit torn, imperfect even, so I'm thinking that could pose a defect.

i had a problam simler to what you have the ps2 just wouldn't recognize ps2 controller in 2nd slot so i opened it up and pulled the ribbon cable out i couldnt put it back in so i put the ps2 back together and took it to a shop for a free qoute they said it was the controller port and cable and it would cost me forty dollars so i said no i got it back and pulled it apart and tried putting the cable back in and after a while of fiddling around i got it in and pushed it in as much as i possible i turned it on put a multi player game in and it works fine and my cable has a bit of a tear in it as well so im not shure if it was just because i got the tear lined up or maybe there is a tear in all of them maybe they were made like that

so maybe you just got to push the ribbon cable further in

and have you tried it with differnt games have you tried it with more than one game ?????

and when you put the multi tap in do you put it in the first slot???

So does it work yet? This happened to me once...so technically I was the only person on earth with this problem. Anyway, very good chance of your ribbon is messed up, second chance would be the controller connector, and thirdly if everything else works fine, your motherboard is messed up. I hate to say it's the motherboard, but it all boils down to the very root of it. Good luck and post it back if you solve the problem. Thanks.

1. Stuck the multitap in the 1 player slot.

2. Tried playing multiplayer with two games. Katamari Damacy 2 and Alien Hominid. Both just didn't work.

3. I went to the store to buy the big fat expensive multitap with the four memory card slots, but it was incompatible because of an annoying little piece of plastic that sticks underneath the controller jack, it's sole purpose being so that it won't plug into the older style ps2's. I have an SCP 39000 and that was made from SCP 90000 and on, so ironically I returned it bought the one designed for the Slim PS2 for half the price, and it actually fit in.

I haven't really tried fiddling around with the ribbon cable all that much. I keep thinking I'm going to eventually break the snapper on the motherboard or controller jack piece, so I'm trying to mess with it as little as possible. And if that snapping thing comes off, there is no way to ever fix it, and it can't be taken back. Harsh ass penalty.

So look at this:

My extra controller port ribbon cable came in the mail yesterday, so when I came home in the morning (I work overnights, 10pm to 7am) I installed it through the laborious taking apart process that I am all too familiar with by now. The important thing is that it works, and I can now play multiplayer games. Amazing! Something actually worked for me!

So yeah... I solved a problem!
