Genji with Swap Magic

in trying to get Genji going with SMD (dvd 2.0, cd 3.0) on my v7 ps2 I got the following results,

w/o cdloader, goes to browser then invalid disc.
w/ cdloader, appears to boot but then the screen goes black, freezes.

tried rebuilding the game to 2.8 gigs from 4, but nothing changed.

the ps2 and dvd's are fine as they've worked with other games since, just wondering if anyone has had any success with Genji.

Works fine with me on a v12 and SM 3.3 backed up with Ridata G04 DVD-R burnt at 4x. No rebuild, btw.
