OK, this is a little different I think.
I am editing a documentary and the previous editor did some preliminary cuts and authored themon dvd's. My problem: many of the source tapes are missing and the footage only exists on these dvd's. None of my edit programs (Avid Express Pro HD, FCP, Edition) will recognize the files from these dvd's. I tried riping them to the hard drive, but the files are still not in a readable format. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

u're using FCP so i'm guessing you're on mac.. of course...

i'm going thru the same thing... i have the VOB. and i used toast 7.

I don't use a Mac, but you can look at this:

It can Demux your files into .m2v and .AC3. I know DVD Studio Pro can handle those files (possibly also Toast), so you would be able to Demux the VOB files and then create the movies.

I would not know how to go about extracting the menus. You could maybe convert the VTS_0x_0.VOB to an m2v file and then use video editing software with a source range or clip feature to extract each menu (maybe mpegstreamclip can do this as well).

thats right.. streamclip is free and i do use it to combine vobs into one VOB and i use toast 7 to convert to psp
