Ok, here's what happened when I burned the game WITHOUT rebuilding it - as would be expected, it would freeze mid-game, and then resume itself...and then after a while it would freeze again, and then unfreeze again, etc...I realized that I'd have to rebuild...

So I rebuild the game, and the total overall size is 1.46Gb, and I play the game for about 15 minutes - seems to work beautifully - but for some reason that freezing thing still happened a couple of times - not nearly as often as before the rebuild, but it's still happening...So Spidey will be in the middle of a jump (or swing) and moving forward at fast speeds, when all of a sudden he gets stuck in the air - and the background (the buildings in the distance) also freeze and take a few seconds to actually load up...I noticed that even the music will freeze for a couple of seconds here and there while our hero is in the air.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong when rebuilding it or if these are just glitches in the original disc...But when I play the original (which is brand new, and so it's in mint condition) it doesn't happen...So I'm confused...If someone could please get back to me on this, I would greatly appreciate it...

Hey, what media are you using? The problem could be they are low quality so the laser is having trouble reading it, and is intermittently freezing. What speed is the disc rated at and what speed did you burn it at. Check the underside of the disc, and if you see different shades on the area that has been written to then your disc is low quality.

Thanks for getting back to me guys...Deadly, question about the unchecking "hide extensions" solution you propose - I haven't tried it yet, but doesn't that only affect how we view a file?...In other words, if a file is Dummy.dat.txt (which mine is), yeah, it may hide the ".txt" part, but it's still a text file, and the computer knows it, right?...Anyway, the original dummy.dat is gone...On my comp now in a folder labeled Spider-man, I only have Dummy.dat.txt along with the other game files.

As for the media, for this game I tried a type that I typically don't use (just happened to get a spindle of it for my birthday)...It was Memorex DVD+R and I burned it at the slowest speed possible for the disc...But I was thinking of trying the discs that I usually use: Fujifilm DVD+R - these discs have given me the most success - although, both of these types of media that I mentioned DO show different shades of purple on the bottom side of the disc, as you suggested...

But Fujifilm, which has always been my disc of choice, has never let me down with a game - I've burned more than a dozen games with Fujifilm, including The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (which also required rebuilding)...So do you still think that this might be the problem?...

I could try a different disc brand...What brand do you suggest?...And should I use +R or -R?...I've heard many people defend both saying that one was better than the other...Not quite sure which one is ACTUALLY better, or whether it depends on the particular PS2 model that you have...Just need to know what brand and format is typically considered "good quality" for games?...I'd appreciate any suggestions...Thank you again.

Generally speaking, v7 and above shouldn't have a problem with +Rs. However, your burner might; burners often slightly "prefer" either -R or +R (for instance, the NEC 3540A has lower PI/PIF errors on average with DVD+Rs), though for all intensive purposes it shouldn't matter too much. A more important indicator is burning speed, imo. The lowest possible speed is not necessarily the most suitable speed for your burner with a certain brand of media. For instance, I had a couple of games where the intro consistently stuttered whenever I burned at 2.4x; when I burned at 4x, it cleared up right away. So figure out what speed works best with your media of choice and your burner, and then stick with it. (This can be difficult to test unless you find a particularly read-intensive game, though.)

As for media, most people will swear by Verbatims/Taiyo Yudens, which are considered the best in the industry. Fujifilms, I believe, are rebranded Taiyo Yudens, so you should be fine there. Personally, I tend to use Ridatas -- they're a bit cheaper usually and I haven't had problems with either -R or +R. Some people have problems with Memorexes, but I've had a small batch of Mem +Rs and they've been okay for me. If you have to rebuild games all the time, though (neither Ultimate Hulk nor Spidey should need any rebuilding at all), you clearly have disc read/laser problems. Since Taiyo Yudens are considered 1st-class media, either your particular PS2 doesn't jive with +Rs, or you are simply burning at the wrong speed for your particular burner. Or your PS2 laser is dying, but let's hopefully rule that out for now :x
