my sister watches a lot of anime and most of them are mkv or ogm files...she burns them as data dvd...when she watches them again on a regular dvd-rom drive..nothing happens...when she tried to open it manually she gets a message saying "windows cannot read this disk. the disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows." so she tried playing the same disc on a dvd burner drive and it plays fine.
then she tried testing her other discs on the dvd-rom drive and whats weird is that some discs containing mkv and ogm files are able to play in the dvd-rom drive and some still cant..she then realizes that the ones that are able to play are the new discs and the ones that can't play are old discs....but everything else is fine when its being played on the dvd burner drive. She even tried playin her old discs that have only avi files on the dvd-rom drive and it played fine. And now she don't know whether its the dvd-rom drive itself that has the problem or the discs. All her disc are dvd+rws from memorex.
so to sum up:
1.mkv/ogms files on new disc = can play on both dvd-rom and dvd burner drive
2.mkv/ogms files on old disc = can only be played on dvd burner drive and not on dvd-rom drive
3.avi files on old disc = can play on both drives
she is also getting a laptop with a Combo DVD/CDRW Optical Drive...she wants to be sure that this problem dont happen or else shes going to end up burning them alllll over again and she has a lottttt of anime. Please help =(

I was going to say upgrade your firmware but then I got to this part:

Quote:
All her disc are dvd+rws from memorex.

If you do a search on the (aD) forum, you'll see how unpopular Memorex disks are around these parts, and rightfully so.

I suggest changing to a better quality media such at Taiyo Yuden, Ritek RiData, Sony, etc...and look for "Made in Japan" on the label.

Good Luck!

xbbangelx ,
Sounds like your sister needs to convert the mkv and ogms files to DVD. Below is a program that might help- avi2DVD. I sent you to the guide section and it lists the progrma you will need. I think the cost is $0.00. This should burn the files so they should play in the DVD-Rom or burner or DVD standalone player
