How many different types of encryption codes (CSS) are there for DVD and what decryptors will decrypt what encryptions that are on the DVDs.

Also is there a program out there that will tell you what type of encryption is on a DVD.

!New! Isn't the different typs of CSS !New!

I'm guessing since no one has replayed to my post, I'm thinking I'll have to go though each and every DVD ripping as a "Blind-man feeling for a needle in a hay stack" Cause there is no simple way of categories it (encryptions) just "feel my way though it ... like the blind at a nudists beach" :) :) :)

Hi AndreL,

Your question is somewhat confusing. Are you wanting to know every type of encryption? That is a long list as there are some that have been out for years and as fast as they are developed they are bypassed. To name a few you have puppetlock and sony ARCOss. The sony encryption seems to be the devil of the two as alot of folks initially have problems bypassing it without the help of AnyDVD. There is also one that has that annoying lil boy that is running across the d*mn screen at the beginning of the dvd but not sure of the name of that protection. A few decrypters would be as follows:

anydvd- works in the background to descramble the encryption so the user can back up his/ her dvd. www.slysoft.com is where you can get the 21 day trial of the software and has lifetime updates once you purchase it.

dvd43- also works in the background but can become a sore if you want to remove it. Freeware

dvd decrypter- a favorite here on AD as up until recently this was capable of ripping the majority of dvds on the market today. No longer updated but can still be used w/ AnyDVD to rip files to your HD. 3 modes of ripping are file mode, ifo (basically for movie only or encoding to AVI, and iso image. (freeware)

dvdfab decrypter- somewhat of a replacement for DVD Decrypter as it does some of the newer dvds but lacks the diversity of decrypter. (get the freeware version) There are others like dvdfab platinum and gold but they are shareware with quite a few options

dvd shrink- another AD favorite which is used to shrink movie files that are larger than 4.7g to fit on a regular consumer bought blank dvd. Was successful in bypassing earlier versions of encryptions initially but no longer updated as the author now works for Nero. (freeware)

dvdidle pro- not certain on this one but reviews have said it can bypass certain encryptions. shareware with evaluation period.

Not sure if this was exactly what you were looking for but I tried to cover most of what i think you were looking for.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

If you don't mind spending the money, AnyDVD is awesome! As soon as a new encryption scheme is introduced these guys are on top of it. Best money I have ever spent on software. To get an idea of the scope of encryptions AnyDVD can handle, check out the link under my reply here. Hasn't failed me yet!

I don't know the type of encryption, but I don't think DVDDecrypter will handle the movie Lords of Dogtown.

The latest version of AnyDVD will handle Lords of Dogtown. If you are having problems I suggest doing the following:

1. Load the dvd into your pc and let it run (keep in mind AnyDVD should have the fox head icon in your system tray meaning it's running)

2. If your system is set to autoplay dvds then play about 30 seconds and AnyDVD will detect it.

3. Close the dvd playing application and open DVD Decrypter and rip away.

This method applies to most pcs who for some reason won't allow you to disable the autoplay function.

Yes AndreL decrypter is for the older encryptions but using AnyDVD in conjunction will get past the newer ones or will be updated. Now all is left is to see how it fairs against this blueray and hd dvds that are coming.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

When I get my DVD burner I plan on using a system on The DVD's. As in first I'll run the DVD through one program and then another until I get it ripped. I plan on buying all those programs up-there .Cause one my rip better then the other.

anydvd-

dvd43-

dvd decrypter-

dvdfab

dvd shrink-

dvdidle pro

Or would that be a waste of time cause they all do the ripping a equal quality.

So please give me your opinions which on ripps the best and witch is next and after that on. And so on and so on.

DVD Fab Decrypeter will also remove the decryption from Lords of Dogtown and it is free compared to ANYDVD

ANYDVD & DVD Fab Decrypter are always being updated so keep an eye out for the most current updates for all your burning needs

Hi AndreL,

I would say definitely purchase AnyDVD. It is always updated for the newest encryptions and has free lifetime upgrades. Also clonedvd2 is another great backup program and is made by the same company, slysoft. The combo is somewhere around 50 dollars. DVD Decrypter is a keeper as I posted can rip in 3 different modes and also can burn. DVD43 from reading is okay but depending on software on your pc I get the notion it can be a bugger..updated but not as fast as AnyDVD. Dvdidlepro...lets just say AnyDVD runs circles around it. The only perk to it is the ability to cache the dvd to save wear and tear on your dvd drive. DVD Shrink is another favorite for after you rip your movie and want to shrink it down to fit on a blank dvd (normally shrink to 4.3g for best fit with little difference from compression). Dvdfab decerypter (freeware) is updated often and does some of the newer movies DVD Decrypter has issues with (personally tested with Lords of Dogtown).

Overall I would say get the freeware rippers and purchase AnyDVD (clonedvd2 is optional as the freebies can do what it can but more steps/ applications). As far as quality comparisions you have to test for yourself as my experience has been relatively the same with all of the applications.

to burn or not to burn that is the question
