HDD Problem, please help!!!

I´m having problems with my 120GB maxtor, i cannot install games on it, i tried it using HDLDumb throught network, but without success, i could install games, but without reason now i cant, HDL/HDA splash at screen "Initializing Convertion, please wait" , everything is fine, PS2 detects HDD as it normal did, i can run games off HDD, but i cannot install games on it anymore, there ´s about 46 GB free.Could it be because this: I used progs like ExecFTPs,HDL Dumb Server (which worked before), and it couldnt be switched off using normal switch, so i used rocker switch on the back, i read something about damaging the PS2 unit, but HDD doesnt work on my Brother´s PS2 either. Do i have to format it? How? Please help!
