Can I get on live to play custom games with a softmodded xbox?

I was wondering if that was possible, because I see modders on live all the time and I was just wondering how they do it. So is there a possible way to get on xbl with a softmodded xbox to play like custom games? If so how do I do it? If not what chip/equipment do I need?
