The file structure of a DVD are arranged and named in accordance with the "DVD Specification".

Here are the folks that wrote it:
http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml

Inside a VIDEO_TS folder you will find three file types:
.ifo
.bup
.vob

The .ifo files contain the navigation InFOrmation your DVD player needs to play the DVD. That is why you can jump chapters have different angles, alternate endings, various languages and all the other things DVDs can do. Remember that with VHS tapes all you could really do is go forward, back or pause.

The DVD Specification requires that all .ifo files are given a BackUP, .bups are these identical files.

The .vobs are the Video OBjects that contain all the actual movie footage in a digital format.

The AUDIO_TS folder is always empty for video DVDs. This folder would have information in it when making an audio DVD. I don't think I've ever seen one. The audio on a regular DVD is multiplexed into .vobs.

Thats the basic layout. Each one of these files is quite complex in its internal structure so you can spend a lot of time looking at what's inside.

Lets put this as easy as possible shall we?

AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS are the folders needed to make up a compliant DVD structure (so it will play in any stand alone DVD player) You will notice that 99% of the time there are no files in the AUDIO_TS folder. Well don't be alarmed by that becasue this is exactly how most DVD's are designed. In your VIDEO_TS folder is where all the neccesary files are that actually make up your DVD (VOB, IFO, BUP).

Basically this is the structure used by the industry so you must comply with this structure if you wish to have a normal DVD.

Hope that helps unless you were looking for something more in depth?

Cheers
