Hi

I followed your guides "Copy your DVD into DivX5 format - Guide for 16:9 anamorphic movies" and "Split AVI files with VirtualDub".

It áll seems to have worked fine but I am still a little confused...I have now a first- and secondpass file, the former is about 10MB and the latter is 1,2GB. When I get to the stage in your second guide "Split AVI files with VirtualDub", I select the original .avi created (this was about 16MB) and it allows me then to split the file into 2 .AVI's. But then they are each only about 6MB big - does the problem go further back?
Also, the second pass file I created is viewable as a .avi file and seems to play the movie fine.
At the one step, in DivX compression settings within Virtual Dub(DivX 5.0.3) Use Quarter Pixel, Use GMC was shaded out (couldn't select). And was it right if I selected in "Variable bitrate mode" firstly "Multipass - first pass" and then Multipass - nth pass"?

I hope you can please help me

thanks

Sounds like you got a little confusion on your splitting. First, the 1st pass file (10mb) can be deleted. This file is only statistics that are used to choose the best encoding methods on the second pass. Once the second pass is complete it's useless. The second pass file is your avi and is the one you should split into two if you plan to burn the movie to CD's. As for the rest of your questions about GMC and such, if you like how the movie turned out then I'd say it's fine that you didn't select it.

Hey thanks that seemed to work, I guess i was a bit confused.

The only thing is that the movie audio is very soft, and the video quality is not quite 100% what I expected - picture quality not that sharp, like when you pause the film etc. (i know...it says in the guide that tweaking the settings will improve the results)

I am a noob and was wondering if you have any tips for me.

I'm running XP P4 2.4 GHz 512MB Ram ATI Radeon 9000 64MB(does this help?)

Cheers

I'm not up on the DIVX standards. Sorry, I always convert DVD to XVID w/ AC3 sound using the stable version of the xvid binary and have had beautiful results. One thing I can say as far as viewing quality of an AVI you probably should try at least 3 or 4 viewers to verify quality. I've seen different degrees of picture quality with different players. Also, when you pause and then start the movie back up it's pretty common for it to stutter or have the audio out of sync for a minute.

If you want the guide for dvd to xvid, this site has a pretty good one that's been good to me. Once I got familiar with it I've added options from other sites.

One item of note in doing this conversion is there is a known bug that can cause the process to crash between pass-1 and pass-2 if you run them together like this guide suggests. This applies to the stable binary and some of the unstable ones though I hear the latest unstable binary's don't have this problem anymore. The easiest way to get around it is to run pass-1 rather than adding it to the job queue. Once it completes then make your changes for pass-2 and run it too.
