I am looking for a good DVD recorder. I have been doing lots and lots of research. I think I have picked a good one, just not to sure. I know nothing about them and what features to look for. The one I have picked is LG Progressive-Scan Multiformat Double-Layer DVD-R/-RW/=R/=RW Recorder Model LRA-516. Please I would love any input you may have. Or if you have on you would recommend. I want to record movies and tv shows, also transfer some vhs to dvd for the grandkids. I also have some home movies I would love to put on dvd. Please help.

Well you can get performance reviews at pcworld.com, epinions has user reviews and so does pricegrabber.com. Last year I had a microadvantage go out on me that was installed in my pc purchased in 2002, I bought an external lite-on and have had no problems and just last week purchased a Double Layer IO Magic internal so haven't had much time to see how good it is LG sounds good to me but I always make it a point to check those websites for tech&user reviews.

Are you looking for a recorder or a burner? If you're looking for a burner check out the plexors. I have a liteon 1633sx and I love it.

Cothran,

You can't go wrong with a SONY. I have had a few different burners. To me, SONY is always the one I go back to. As long as I have the necessary software, I usually do not have any problems with Sony. I have also had HP (SUCKS), Lite-on, Mad-Dog (get what you pay for), oh and I also had a SAMSUNG burner which I absolutely loved as much, if not more than the Sony (the Samsung was a newer upgrade) but I forgot to switch it back out when I upgraded comps! *LOL*

Oh and speaking of RECORDINGS - you mentioned transfering VHS and home movies etc ... Those are more software issues than burning isses. As long as you have the software to handle those request, your burner can finish it out. Pinnacle software has various options for those type of recordings and so does Intervideo. Unfortunately, I have not had a great chance to test out Intervideo program. But I did used to dabble with pinnacle quite a bit and loved using it to transfer my home CAMCORDER videos to dvd.

PS When you transfer VHS, please be aware that can take up alot of harddrive space so be sure to have plenty.

Thanks for all your advice. I will go and look at some Sony's today. I am ready to get started. Is there are certain model number I should look at? Also price range. I have never seen such a price range on these things.

As far as the prices go,

Sony is not going to be the cheapest, but its not necessarily the most expensive either. I am not sure what the latest model number is for SONY at this point (maybe the 700/800 series). However, generally speaking, you could spend anywhere from 100-250 for ANY burner. MOST of the time though, you should be able to find a decent one w/o having to pay more than 200 (even if that means getting some rebates with it).

I have seen alot of people comment about shopping at newegg.com also. Personally, I have only been on their site once or twice looking for mp3 players and was not impressed, but I have seen many people quote about the bargains they have gotten for burners at prices less than $100. GOOD LUCK! PS- keep in mind, you will get a better deal if you buy a burner that you put into the comp-tower - all ,mine have been externals but that is only because I have no clue how to install the burners and did not really care about paying a little extra for the convinience.

I have just bought a Sony DRU-800A internal for $98.00 at Future Shop. Canada it works great and the software that came with it ( Nero ) is one of the best. Derick
