Hi to everyone.
I had a question about Legal and Illegal issues about coping DVD and VHS movies.
A friend of mine wants me to make dvd backups for him and to also convert his VHS movies to DVD. Is this Legal to do or will I get into trouble if I do this for him?
I told him that I'll charge him only $5.00 per movie just to cover the cost of disc and my time.
Can I do this without getting into trouble?
P.S. I hope this is the right place to post this question, if not I'm sorry I just didn't see a place for something like this.
Thank's A Million,
Steve37

It is illegal, but if you do it without advertising it and just keep it to yourself, you'll be fine. I make backup copies of movies for my family and friends all the time even though it's wrong.
My name is Domino Harvey. I am a bounty hunter.

Thank's,
I was told if they owned an orignal copy of the movie, that it wasn't Illegal to make backups. But it seems that I heard wrong. Thank's for your help.

All you have to do is read the warnings on the DVD cover or at the begining of every movie and you will know it is illegal. So if you don't trust your friend maybe you shouldn't be making him/her any backups..
Cheers

I have actually been around just about everyday believe it or not. I just don't have to answer to many questions anymore because all of you are doing such a fine job :-) I just put something in every once in a while if I feel it will be of any help, but like I said most of it would just repeating what some of you are already telling someone so there is no need to post. You guys just keep up the great work and remember I will always be watching you.. ;-) muwha, muwha, muwha-ha-ha

If you do decide to do it, make sure it is not some idiot that will go and make copies of the one you make for him and start selling them. That can only cause you trouble.

Well, from what I understand, it is legal to make backup copies of owned DVD's, however, it is illegal to break the encryption code, so there in lies the paradox.

It was legal until you got into the charging part... That this ILLEGAL
You can make backups of his movies for him but if you're going to be making a profit then it's illegal...

^^ If that's the case, then you could always sell a blank DVDR for $5 and offer the copying service for free.
I am pretty sure it is illegal to copy a movie for anyone other than yourself. However, as sytyguy stated, it is illegal to break the copy protection.
