errors playing avi video files from mirc

i have been playing these files with no problem since 10/04 on my computer using real player or windows media.since last week i have been getting errors when i start playing these movies.these error messages are made by microsoft but used with different programs.can microsoft install something in my computer to keep me from playing these movies?if so how can i find out what they installed and how can i get rid of it?
