My Philips DivX compatible player plays XviD no problem. Fitting a film onto CD it's only going to cost you a few pence to find out if you are gonna have any problems.

If you encode with XviD using the DXN HT profiles, use AVI (non opendml)as a container, change the FourCC to DX50 and use mp3 or AC3 as audio then it should work 100% fine on all DivX certified players.

You might also want to look up what chipset your player uses, because my advice was purely for compatibility with all players. You may for instance be able to get away with CQM's (Custom Quant Matrix) or qpel since some chipsets support them.
