I have a 30001 model PS2 with a mod (not sure which mod) that plays pretty much everything and also a PS2 with SM 2.0, and neither boot the game. My friend has a slimline PS2 with a newer SM and it works apparently. I used a Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+R and burned it at 2x with DVD Decrypter also. Anyone who's done a successful backup mind telling us what DVD media and model PS2 you have?

Ok I got mine to work....I think the problem was that i loaded the iso file instead of the mds file and also because sm 2.0 doesnt work that good....sm 3.6 works like a charm with this game...

I got it to work on my modded system at least. I was burning my DVD+R at 2x, which didn't work. 2.4x worked. Still doesn't work on SM 2.0, so I guess I should upgrade sometime soon so this won't happen again with others.

Mine still didn't work ,I burned the mds file and use sm 3.6 .It just sends me to a black screen. NOTHING. Is the game protected with a special new code, because this is the only game I'm having this problem with?

Maybe try a different brand of media or different burning speeds. I also think this game is very glitchy. The GameFAQs board has several posts about bugs and game freezes. I have a feeling Midway rushed this game out the door without enough bug-testing, so it might be (one) of the causes of the booting problem.

Yeah Swap Magic 2.0 had a lot of issues with games needing rebuilt and fixes from swapmagicfix.com Sometimes you needed to use cogswap loader or DVD loader to get games to work. SM 3.6 alleviates the need for that and is only $20, so don't waste time on 2.0.

You're using good media, try burning at 4x or 8x. Sometimes bigger TOC games with heavy FMV spin faster, and if they are burned at lower speeds the PS2 laser has a hard time keeping up. Lately I've come across a number of threads that have complained of having a difficult time with Verbatim DVD-R's. Maybe try a different type of media. It's illogical but some people claim to have had better success with lower quality media like TDK or maxell. It's not so much a matter of better or worse, just that some burner's are more compatible with certain media.

Then trying burning at 4x, then 8x if that doesn't work.

I've tried all them methods. and I'm using SM 3.6 plus my dvd burner is a +rw and won't burn dvd-r and verbatim + brands won't read in my ps2 for some reason, keeps saw can not recognize disk. I think my ps 2 is a very old model because the SM cd rom loader won't work in it also.

You're positive it won't burn DVD-R's? That's most likely the problem. The older PS2's (v.4 and earlier I think) are very fickle when it come's to DVD+R's. I guess my advise would be to find a friend who can burn DVD-R's and maybe try some different media. Verbatim is quality for sure, but a few people have complained their burner/PS2 doesn't work well with Verbatim.

Okay...earlier I said I got the game to work....but now it seems it works when it wants to...haha...This is very odd.. because I have over 45 backups and they all boot fine unless there is some block in which I patch it...and It works. Someone help..

Well a lot of the advise offered in this thread is sound. There is no magic formula that works every time when backing up PS2 games. Try different media. Then alternating burning speeds. Start at 2x, 4x, then try 8x. If that doesn't work check to see if The Suffering needs to be rebuilt. I dunno what you're using to burn but check here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/117975 90% of the time it's some simple issue. Good Luck.

Tigndrag, my PS2 model is 30001 (which I guess is fairly old, I bought it in 2001 or 02) and I have had good luck with Ritek Ridata DVD+Rs which you can get from http://www.rima.com or any other reputable online DVDR store. I ran out of them, so I wasn't able to try Suffering 2 with them, but you might want to try that brand. My Swap Magic machine seems to like Taiyo Yudens less, although I think the problem is I need a newer version of SM.

I still think the major problem is with the game itself. The first Suffering game froze a lot when it was at the loading screen. Midway has only had a year, maybe more to make this game. The Prince of Persia games were very buggy too, and look how fast PoP: The Warrior Within came out after PoP: Sands of Time. Just a thought.

Yeah that's possible and since I've never played any of those games I'm not gonna sit here and say you're wrong. However, I do know for a fact that some people have created backups of POP and The Suffering that work fine. 30001 is a v.4 PS2, same one I have. You can check which version you have here: http://www.chipzone.com/versions.cfm If the game itself is buggy it's more likely whoever ripped the original image didn't do it correctly. Again try different media and burn speeds and if that doesn't work it's probably the image file.

Thanks for that link. My modded PS2 is 30001R, so I now know it's V5 (I still want to find out what kind of modchip I have), and my SM PS2 is 30001, V4.

What you said about V4 PS2s having trouble with DVD+Rs is probably true; my DVD+R backups take longer to load on the V4 and some don't even work (though that might be partially due to the SM 2.0).

BTW, I didn't mean to say that PoP and The Suffering 1 didn't work right, as I have also done them both successfully.

No you're wrong your afterdawn privellages have been hereby revoked. Yeah did you buy your console premodded? People have a lot of problem's with premodded consoles and getting the dreaded 'clones.' I am planning on get my v. 4 chipped with a DMS 4 Pro. YOu just need to be careful when buying premods. There are lot more scam artists then legit sites out there.

I'm not sure what you mean. I got the V5 30001R model pre-modded with an Apple chip from Lik-Sang (before Sony got to them) and it's worked fine, boots pretty much everything.

The V4 30001 PS2 with flip-lid (which I installed myself) I got from a local store earlier. That's the one that loads games slightly slower.

this one was a tricky one for me. it wouldn't burn on my usual burner but i then tried it on my other one and it worked fine. i used decrypter, sm 3.3 and tdk DVD+R. it stalled at about 70% on my usual burner but was fine on the other.

I just meant that a lot of premodded consoles use knock off chips that don't work well. Most people have little knowledge of modchips and so assume they are getting a quality chip. There are several people who will take advantage of this and put some POS chip in the premodded PS2. There are a couple sites which are very reputable as far as premods go. If you order outside of them likely you have some knock off of a name brand mod chip. I think there was a problem like this with the Matrix Infinity and modbos or s/t. Either way glad your apple chip works well.
