Here are my current RPG recommendations (since this went waaay off topic from FF):
Gameboy: Riviera - The Promised Land - if you want something really new/innovative (its made by Sting, marketed by Atlus if that give you a clue.....can u say Disgaea on GBA??)
Final Fantasy 4: Classic from the SNES era ('nuff said!)
Tales of Phantasia: Kick arse battle system + good SNES nostalgia to boot
Long, loooong quest: Dragon Quest 8 (even w/out the sidequests...)
short but eXcellent: Grandia III
30+ hours each x 4 discs: the .hack series (Infection through Quarantine)
freaky characters, but innovative gameplay: Magna Carta
You can't go wrong with these. I'm not including any hack/slash RPGs, strategy or anything strange. Almost straight up old school RPG, with a bit of action thrown in.

xhardc0re, now I have two sources who said Riviera was an interesting game, so I guess I'm going to have to check it out, lol.
Never really got into the .hack// series, anime or RPG, but I guess I can try one of the games now that I have mod capabilities.
Anyway, I haven't heard much discussion about a few RPGs I liked recently, so maybe I can spur some discussion...
Has anyone tried out Atelier Iris and Radiata Stories? They're not really dark games, but I still liked both, they have a certain charm.
Also on a completely side-note, does anyone still play Point and Click adventures anymore today? I was wondering if my breed has finally gone pretty much extinct, heh.
Signature? What signature!? Oh wait...I actually have one

ToP's SNES ROM was "fanslated" by DeJap a couple years ago. They're my pals in that they actually translate good Japanese RPGs so us Kanji illiterate can enjoy games that were apparently deemed "not marketable" in the US/West.
However, recently they HAVE released ToP on GBA...at all costs please stay away! The battlesystem has been slowed down so much for the GBA's processor, that it's ridiculous. Plus the made the graphics all crazy colorful and simplified. It creeps me out.
I don't know why but I never liked the Golden Sun series.
And even as Point and Click goes down the drains, I'll forever support them! And I don't count CSI and other weird crap as a Point and Click. I should've been more specific and say I really only like 3rd Person P&C. No Mysts and the like for me.

The fact is, Final Fantasy used to be a quality series, but has sold out to the quick cash grab genre, just like so many other titles. Lets review the (English) Final Fantasy games, shall we?
Final Fantasy 1: Arguably one of the best NES Games ever made, a fan favorite and one still many enjoy. Damn hard, and great gameplay for its time. It set the bar for rpg's.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest: Many people will disagree with me here, but the game was a fun game. Sure, it wasn't a true Final Fantasy game, and sure, it wasn't even a great game, but it was fun enough, and it was something for Square to test the water with. This game introduced a lot of people, myself included, to rpg's.
Final Fantasy 2 (4 Jap): A brilliant game for its time, and one that set the standards for rpg games to come. An engrossing storyline, challenging gameplay, and an actual story (gasp).
Final Fantasy 3 (6 Jap): Continuing on in a path of excellence, Final Fantasy 3/6 is regarded as one of the best games ever made. Square sought to raise the bar, and they set it to unheard of nights. A brilliant musical score, a gripping story, and solid gameplay make this one of the competitors for best game ever.
Final Fantasy 7: Seeking to breach the PS2 market, Squaresoft sought out to make the best rpg they could possibly make. And they did. Did they ever. Another cornerstone in great gameplay, and a storyline that can't be beat. My personal favorite.
Final Fantasy 8: This is where things started going downhill. Squaresoft touted the graphics of this game to be incredible, and started talking about how the game is indescernable from cutscenes, and realistic people, blah blah blah. The game was ok, don't get me wrong, but this was the start of the Graphics over Story era.
Final Fantasy 9: Final Fantasy 9 felt empty to me, partially because Sqaure focused more on the chibi style of characters and less on the game itself. Kuja was underdeveloped as a villain and I never really grew to hate him like I did Sephiroth or Kefka. Necron came out of left field and left me with a 'WTF' for an ending.
Final Fantasy 10/X2: This would be the point Squaresoft sold out. Putting the graphics way ahead of the storyline, they abandoned the world map and many KEY Final Fantasy aspects (Including most of Nobuo Uematsu's score) for the sake of techno trash and boobs. People bought it for the Final Fantasy title and were mostly disappointed, but attempting to cash in off its popularity, they created a second, even worse, game in its wake, the first time Square has ever made a sequel to its series.
Final Fantasy XI: Abandoning story completely, they decided to make a cash cow. I haven't actually played the game, but I've heard its not that great, and its an MMORPG to boot. Squaresoft lost a lot of points with me here for sinking to quick cash as opposed to making a good game.
And here we stand on the verge of Final Fantasy XII, and the FF7 spin offs, Dirge of Cerberus, the cell phone game, and Before Crisis. How they do will all depend on whether square has learnt its lesson. If these games are legitimately fun and detailed like older games, we may have one of the greatest games of all time on our hands.
Or if they try to cash in a quick buck as per their last few endeavors, with Squaresofts current dismal financial standings, this
fantasy might actually be final.

Squaresofts DISMAL financial standings? Are you freaking kidding? hahahaha Ive heard a lot of people say alot of things, but never anything like that. The PDF report for the figures at the end of last fiscal year, don't show signs of any major deteriation to the Square-Enix franchise. I totally disagee with you about Final Fantasy X, its one of the best FF games ever made, best RPG for PS2 yet, tho DQVIII is a strong contender.

I'll give respect to anybody who's nick is a reference to Lunar: The Silver Star. Actually Ghaleon I agree with 90% of what you say, except I though Square sold out around FFVII. FFVII is great to be sure, but as you pointed out the trend has moved towards nice 3D rendered visuals, and away from plot and gameplay. I also liked FFX, FFX-2 was an abomination to RPG's everywhere. I've made that same point a couple times in this thread only to rebuked each time. We're a dying breed, glad to know I'm not dying alone. Old school games are the shite, FFV is still my fav. I think FFXII will be a royal let down, if the demo is any indication.
@TMARPG I have backups of Atelier Iris:Eternal Mana and Radiata Stories. They both seem like very good games, and have gotten favorable reviews. The former was stuck at 98.7% on BitTorrent for like a month, so I "acquired a copy by other means. I should cross the 200 backup plateau soon. I stopped counting awhile back, I know I'm over 150. Modchips rule. I'm out. Cheers!

Mmm.. thats not entirely fair either. Demo's have a notorious history of being unstable and crappy. Look at the F.E.A.R. demo for instance, the performance was dismal, which lead people to believe the system specs would be through the roof. I don't think we can judge FFXII until its actually out.
As for squaresofts dismal financial status, they aren't that well off. They took a very heavy hit from Spirits Within that they are still feeling. What did it cost them, something like 150 million down the drain, of which they didn't even make 1 million in the box office? I'm sorry, but only Microsoft can take a hit like that and not feel the blow. They were lucky to survive at all.
As for FFX being one of the best rpg's ever, your -sadly- mistaken. You never really grew attached to any of the characters, and their choice -not- to make Seymour the final boss was horrible. At least give us the gratification of fighting the devil we know, rather then pull a boss out of your ass for us to fight. It had its moments, sure, every game does. Even the much criticized Legend of Dragoon holds a place in my memory for some things that it did that were original. Even the music demonstrates how they nodded to the masses. Ever wonder why the score was all electronic keyboard and the occaisional fake trumpet? Look on the back of your soundtrack CD, you'll see three names. Why is that bad? Because it should only be one, Nobuo Uematsu. He created a grand total of five tracks in that game, and they were by far the highlights. The others were bland, and unmemorable.
FFX2 was nothing more then a bunch of fat cat executives saying 'How can we milk the Final Fantasy cash cow more then we are now?'
As for selling out around FFVII, your about one title off. They still had a -lot- of vision for 7, which is why the game was as great as it was. You had villains that weren't -entirely- villains (Rufus and company, even if they were corporate money mongers, at least TRIED to protect the citizens of Midgar in the end), a diverse range of characters, a BRILLIANT musical score, and a gripping storyline. You actually felt a sense of dread on the second and third disk when you saw that glowing red ball of darkness in the sky that was meteor.
What did Final Fantasy 8 have? Who the hell was Ultimecia and why was she doing what she did? They never really get into it fully.
'Oh, I'm an evil sorceress, KILL DE SEEDZ' (Final Boss Battle Start)
Necron
*Appear* (Final Boss Battle Start)
Yu Yevon gets kudos for trying something new. The summon thing was kinda interesting (and painful if you overlevelled like I did). But Yu Yevon itself was a joke. It doesn't even attack, it just floats there.. argh!!!!
5 and 4 were fun games, but to me the apex of the series is 6 and 7, and I personally lean towards 7. Story always takes priority over graphics (look at Lunar), but when Graphics and Story are equal, the better graphics wins.

Well let's not get into telling people they're wrong for having a different opinion. I feel FFX-2 was an abomination, but there are people who I respect in this thread that think otherwise. So that's a difference of opinion, not a right and wrong thing. Just as I really enjoy FFX, there are others who like FFX-2 better. There are plenty of people in this thread who detest older games becuase they were younger when they came out, or they were born after the advent of the PSX and FFVII. Again I like old school games, but I can't thrust those opinions on other's. As far as the FFXII demo, I doubt they're going to retool the entire battle system I'm sure they'll fine tune everything and what not, add some stuff to the U.S. version, but mostly they're probably translating the text at this point. I wouldn't expect the final product to be that much different than the demo. It's due out in the U.S. in August, I doubt there's major changes to be made between now and then.

It saddens me as well that the RPG industry isn't what it used to be. But there will always be that one company that produces a game true to the console RPGs roots. And there's always hope for a series...
Tokijin: I feel the same with with RPGs and other games in general. Like me and my Point and Click adventures, I guess it's something that you have to grow up with and even then they're a true niche game. Hell, they're never really pretty or fastpaced, but there's one thing it's guranteed to have, story! Maybe it's just because I grew up with Apple II's and DOS based IBM's, so there wasn't much in the computer realm besides text based games and the point and click adventure, but I grew to love them.
As for RPGs hopefully we'll see a good balance between holding true to the roots of RPG'dom and new innovative change that benefits all.

Right, think people need some chill time. You're all entitled to ur opinions, but fact rules over opinion. Not that waht im saying is fact, im just speaking my mind too. I never said FFX was one of the best RPG's ever, one of the best for the PS2 though, since i fail to see what u mean. It had characer development, it had story development. Yu Yevon wasn't an outta the blue boss, they were talking about him from the time of Yunalesca. As for the soundtrack, Nobuo Uematsu was planning to leave Square at that time, so i would see why he produced only a few songs. The Soundtrack wasnt great, good enough tho, and good enough to warrant a 140-hour play through for me. Though i did never manage to beat Penance without Yojimbo. Got VERY close tho...
Though im a younger gamer, i have appreciation for the older games. Ive played only a few of em though, not as many as someone like Tokijin. Thats because FF7 was my first RPG. i played games like FFI, II and V later on on my PS2 and GBA respectively. I couldnt really be bothered with them, because i had my PS2 games at the time which i found to get going quicker and put me in the midst of things about 2 hours in. FF4 and FFVI were brilliant, played one straight after the other, they were great. FF's were at their peak in story telling elements in those games, as well as character development.
Point and Click, hmm. I played Broken Sword, if that can be called point and Click, and Discworld Noir. Was quite into both of them, til i got stuck and put em away.
Right, finally. There are plenty of GOOD RPG's coming out now. Im not gonna mention any of em, but you know what they are. Im still waiting for that GREAT game though, something that gives you that Overwhelming feeling such as FF7 did for me, at SO many points throughout the game. Anyway, thats my piece, say what u wanna, cant change my mind about these games, or Datawrite Yellows. lol

I love the ff series! Its amazing! I completed ffvii and ffx. I found 7 sensational. I loved the storyline, it has the best soundtrack ever, brilliant characters! I use to have a backup of 9 but it stopped working and i didnt replace it. I use to hav ffx-2 but i thought that was crap so i traded it in. I cant wait till ffxii. Its top of my list of games Im going to get.

Top of my list... Kingdom Hearts II i'd say. More excited about that than FFXII, won't be after ive started playing it though. I'll be waiting for the next best thing, which in this case is FFXII. Oooh, those Datawrites have the CMC Magnetics code on them. Big blow to my ego? I don't think so. I specifically remember saying that i only use them for backups, to put onto my hard drive. They serve the purpose and thats it. Why would i pay extra for something else, if thats the only reason im using them for? lol
Playing Grandia III, brilliant game, i feel IGN were a little wrong about the score for this one, it deserves at least an 8. Im about 12 hours in now, play it quite often. Theres not much need for as much level building as DQVIII. Though i like fighting enemies, the battle systems pretty awesome, and the special attacks are great.

Well as long as that's the only purpose for the Data Writes. You know, you don't need a disc to put games on your HD, you can simply download games and transfer em to the HD with Winhiip. Of course I seem to remember you being in the UK or New Zealand or something. Why would that be a big blow to your ego? I'm not having a media war in this thread, that can remain in other threads. That being said I've got 155 Taiyo Yuden's in reserve, 55 non braned TY's, 50 MIJ Sony TY DVD-R's, and 50 MIJ Sony TY DVD+R's. Even my small hick town has TY's.

DataWrites!! Arrgghhh i cant stand those things. I had a 50 pack of 4x DVD-R's from them (I didn't buy them) and about 2/3 were coasters in my Teac Laptop drive, about 1/3 in my LiteOn drive. Utter Crap! They had SKC codes though if i remember correctly. I had some Imation 8x -R's that where CMC Mag and they burnt alright, but the dye was not smooth and uniform on the data side, so i sent them back. They didnt work very well in my PS2 either, very slow loading. I've just started uni, cant wait till im all settled in, ill get my ps2 and get Grandia III, TOL and Star Ocean up and running, cant wait to play them! Cant wait for KH2 and the new Shadow Hearts either, they look great.

Hey congrats on being a member 360 dude. It's nice to see some people actually get to 100 posts without posting a bunch of BS. Dunno if Shadow Hearts has a website or not. Usually the official sites blow, you'll probably get better info on ign.com or gamespot.com. Third party websites tend to be a lot more objective, kinda like back in the day when Nintendo Power would rate Nintendo games well no matter how God awful they were. SH3 American release comes out in a week. Woohoo! If your modchippin somewhere else, then you can download it too. I'm downloading Armored Core Nexus now, no idea if it's any good or just a remake of a US AC game. I don't think so, because it's two discs. Gotta love having a chip, FFX international and PAL games are no prob. Cheers!

About Grandia III's rating: I personally use reviews barely as an indicator on how well the game was made. I usually look at the description of technical details at most and let myself decide on the story and characters, as I've come to have quite a few disagreements with them in the past. Though sometimes I actually feel like the average consumer should pay heed to them a little more carefully. It always boggled my mind how RANDOM MOVIE ADAPTATION GAME will be slammed by many sources as a horrible travesty to the gaming world, yet outsell a critically acclaimed, but obscure title. DAMN YOU MARKETING! (Sorry for the tangent.)
Tokijin:
Ah, the Armored Core series...one of my guilty pleasures that probably resulted in playing MechWarrior and Heavy Gear on my NEC. Armored Core Nexus is pretty neat, and as you mentioned has two discs. The first is called Revolution, as it contains rehashes of missions past, from previous AC games, with updated graphics and so forth. The second disc, Evolution, is the new. It has new modes, missions, parts and what not. It even supports online play! But with a backup that probably would prove tricky, and honestly, I always liked the mission based stuff myself.

Yeah it should finish today. 6GB's im two days, not bad. I wouldn't be able to play it online if it's the PAL version. I just downloaded it because it was there, always a fan of the AC series, even if I don't play the game that much, it's still good to have.

I love old PSX games FF9 I love so funny. You guys should play Breath of Fire 1-3 1 and 2 are on SNES/GBA and BoF3 is on PSX. BoF 4 was great but Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter was too short but fun. THey are my favorite games.
I have the old Driver 1 and Driver 2 but I couldn't rip them to my PC and my PS2 won't read them! Trying to download Driver 2 but no seeders at 98.8 %!! And Driver 1 is no where to be found :(

Yeah the BOF series is good. I really liked 2 and 4. 1 and 3 were okay. Dragon Quarter was a disgrace to the BOF series, it's not worthy of the name. It was somewhat challenging, but the temporary save deal didn't do much for me. Oh boy I can play through the game and get a better D-ratio, so I can play through it again. Yuck, once was enough.

Why isn't .hack considered in line to become one of THE best RPG series in the world? I suggest you check out http://www.dothackers.net and see what all the hype is about. Downloa....errrr "find" the .hack//Infection game and play it for yourself. It has a great battle system, interesting story, an offline world unlike any other (going strong with 5 Animes, 8 Mangas/books, and tons of merchandise)....it just kicks so much @$$. You won't regret it, trust me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.hack .hack//G.U. is going to blow away ALL ideas of what a MMORPG should be about. It's a 3 volume series, with several anime tie-ins & lots of new stuff. Get caught up in "The World R2" and you might become the next Evercrack victim LOL.

I watched .hack sign the anime. It started out okay, but it lagggggeeeedddddd horribly towards the end. It ended up being average. I am going to backup .hack quarantine soon, but I doubt I'll play it any time soon. I've just got too many games that I know are better to play next.
