Okay, so I finally tried to burn a backup, just for the sake of it. I don't use a modchip, just stream the GCOS 1.5 Teaser Revision 2 with psul through the bba.

After inserting the disc, GCOS mentioned it didn't recognize the media (Sony Videocamera mini dvd-r), and so wouldn't/couldn't boot the backup.

I was wondering.. is it the media that's incompatible with the gamecube? Or could it be a faulty burn? Is there any way to check that?
