Xvid vs. MP4 ?

Just discovered the .mp4 file format, and noticed that it's remarkably smaller than the Xvid format... Haven't seen the mp4 yet. How big would a mp4 file be if it contains the same quality as the xvid file?

Have noticed many .mp4 movies in only 250 MB is this really "the movies mp3"?? Or should I stick to the Xvid?

Let me hear some opinions...

mp4 is the container. you can still put XviD into mp4.
but what you might meant is h.264 AVC.
yes it is superior than XviD. but if you don't have a powerful PC, at least 1Ghz or higher.
if you want quality sure go with it. the best encoder are from Nero.
a slight less quality but free is x264

Not sure that Nero's current public AVC codec producers higher quality than x264. x264 supports HP features, Nero's public encoder does not.

No such thing as XviD format really. XviD is purely a video codec and as said it can be stored in mp4. In fact if the mp4 file you are talking about was ASP then it could be using XviD for video, you can check by looking for an XviD bitstream version in the user data.

Noticed that you mentioned mp3, this is interesting since mp4 specs allow for mp3 audio. Another reason for the smaller filesize though is AAC audio which is more efficient than mp3 (especially when talking about he/ps aac). No reason why you can't use AAC and XviD in another container though like mkv or AVI.
