Help me with HD Loader!

Hi I am new to this sort of thing. I downloaded HD Loader read the instructions, and burned it to a cd popped it in my ps2 (fat version), and it diddn't work. Is there any way WHATSOEVER, that I can boot this cd (so I can format the HD with HD Loader) and play my games off the Hard Drive? Do I absolutely have to have a modchip or swapdisk thing? I heard from a friend that if you have the disk from Final Fantasy XI online (the one that formats the hard drive) you can somehow use it to use a burned copy of HD Loader.

Also, if I do end up having to buy a Mod Chip, what is a good one that is pretty easy to install, and has almost all the features of a Matrix Infinity (ie: auto shutoff after booting a game, dvd region free, ect.)?

If you want to play a burnt copy of hd loader, yes, you need a modded ps2. OR, you can BUY the hd loader disc, the new one is called hd advance, and no mod is needed.
