I'm looking at buying a Pioneer 105 DVD burner and note that there seem to be a lot of compatibility issues where DVD burning is concerned. Can anyone recommend the best budget DVD-R media for use with this drive?

I'll mainly be using it for DVD Movie Backups.

I've not come across any in the UK so far. The only success I've had is with Ritek - G04 4x discs. At about £1.80 each they're good value but obviously not as cheap as some.

Thanks - I've read that Datasafe Classic discs (2x) are apparently quite good. Any experience with them?

Also, do the compatibility issues only affect budget media or are the grossly expensive branded discs (ie - TDK, Maxell etc) just as susceptible?

I have used Datasafe 2x discs which have a blank inkjet printable side on them. So far I have only had one burn correctly and that was a movie that was under 4gb. Anything over and the usual problems re-occur. They seem to have the same dye colour as the Datawrite "yellows".

I'm next trying some Verbatim 2x discs and some Datawrite 4x media and I'll let you know how that goes.

I think the problems generally occur with the cheaper discs.

just buy a gross of Ritek - G04 4x discs and be done with it for God's sake! They work perfectly and at 1.79 each, free shipping at Shop4Tech.com, it's a no-brainer!

Thanks for the info lads - I'm gonna hang back a while and wait for the higher qualiy media to come down in price.

In the meantime I think I'll get myself a 200Gb Hard Drive and back up my DVD's on that!
