I have a question (after at least 5 minutes of searching because I could have sworn reading about this somewhere) about PS2 backup burning speeds. I have backup-ed about 10 games so far, most of them were CompUSA DVD+R's (they work, that's not the problem I'm addressing), and I burned all of them at 2.4x using Nero. The question is, does the burning speed affect the PS2 reading speeds, laser, or anything else? If so, should I re-backup the games at a slower speed? I have had no problems with the loading speeds or reading with my PS2 and backups, although if anybody wants to help out as with my 2nd question, my PS2 doesn't read the Swap Magic CD (not DVD) sometimes, although my CD PS2 games work perfectly. I have to reset my console 5-10 times (and sometimes blow very hard on the disk, oddly enough) before it begins to work. My 3rd and last question is, how does Gameshark Lite play PS1 backups? I'm thinking of buying one (I saw one for about $5 at videogamecentral.com) and I want to know how to use it to read PS1 backups with a slide card.

One last question, is it true that using Swap Magic discs damages your PS2?

cheap media may work but i would not reccomend it.
they use cheap dye and will stress out your laser
because the PS2 has to work harder to read them.
As far as burning speed:
i buy only 8X speed DVD's and burn them at 4X and never
have had a problem. the only problem i have seen lately on
burning speed is if it is too slow( like 1X) on some games
then the PS2 has a harder time keeing up with the graphics
in the game (like San Andreas & NFS underground) and will
skip or freeze or have weird effects while driving where the
road in front of you disappears. Buring too fast can also cause
this because the burn will not be as good. So a happy medium
is what i reccomend

my V7 had a problem with the Swap Magic CD version also
not sure why but since i don't play any CD based games i
just didn't worry about it.

and if your games work fine then there is not need to
waste DVD's reburning them.

Thanks for all the help, I'll try to keep all of those factors in mind while burning. BTW, those CompUSA discs are $24.99 (right now) for a 100-pack spindle of either +R or -R with 4x burning speed max and 4.7 Gig capacity.

that's pretty good. But you can wait and find better
media on sale that will not wear out the laser as fast
i just got some 25 packs of Philips 8X DVD-R
at Circuit City for $7.98 each (regular price $19.99)
Got a 100 pack of TDK 8X DVD+R Printable at Costco for $20
they had 2 100 packs buy one get one free so really it
was 200 DVD's for $40

Wow, thanks for all the prices, I think I'll visit my local Costco today.

About that wearing the laser out thing, will I ever have to buy a new laser if I only use those games on the cheap media from time to time? My PS2 is a V7, and I've had it for a good 4-5 years.

BTW, can anybody answer my question about the Gameshark Lite?

I just use Office Max 8x DVD-R discs for my PS2. The are media code RITEKG05 which most agree are among the best media out there. They usually go on sale for $29.99 for 100 once a month. On the gameshark lite thing I don't know since I use a regular PS1 game shark to boot PS1 games with a fliptop. When it asked for the game disc don't eject swap the discs via fliptop or slip card and it should work of the times. It works better than the Breaker Pro disc I spent $20 on that's only purpose is to boot ps1 games. I'm betting the Gameshark lite would work the same way.
