Okay usually when I back up my movies...I just use DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and sometimes Nero. I also have DVD43 running in the background to break the region code. I'm planning to switch to AnyDVD in a few days but I'm not sure if its still gonna make any difference. I start by opening up shrink to cut out any unwanted extras or to compress a movie. Then I encode it with shrink. After encoding, I use decrypter to burn my back up. When I'm done backing up my dvd, I reinject the back up to test it out on my dvd rom. Now when my pc reads the back up copy, it reads it as a blank dvd but when I check out the disc it has been burn already. The disc doesn't even read on my dvd player. The only time when I used Nero only is when I do a direct copy of a whole entire DVD5. Now I used DVDFab Decrypter to rip the dvds. Then I repeat the same old shrink and decypter routine which worked. Now when I do it, its coming out like before. Reading the burned backed up copy as a blank. Its weird because the dvds that I was backing up wasn't even encrypted or anything. Its also region free.

Can you post up your successfully backed up log from DVD Decrypter by chance? If you'd already successfully decrypted and or ripped the movie into your hard drive and have DVD Shrink to do the encoding job, then it is likely not a DVD43, DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink issue, possibly a bad media or burning issue. Other things to look out are:

What speed did you used to burn?
What blank/media (and media codes) are you using (and what format i.e. -R/+R)?
Is your dvd burner firmware's up-to-date (also your dvd rom drive)?
How old is your dvd player?

You should set the settings in DVD Shrink to have Nero burn and set the speed to 4X, since you're having issues with DVD Decrypter. I have DVD Decrypter to do all the "decrypting and ripping" into my hard drive (using Mode, File F - this is flawless). Once that process is done, I encoded it with Nero Recode 2 and set my "custom size to 4360MB" and when it's done encoding, I back it up with Nero Burning Rom.

Sorry I didn't save my log. All I remember from the log is under "Disc Information" by "Empty" it says Incomplete. I have a NEC 3540A drive which goes all the way up to 16x. I got this drive around August. I think I might know what the problem was. I might have didn't update the firmware. By using Nero Infotool, I found out that my write speed was only 2.4x. That is strange though because even before updating it, I was able to burn at the rate of 6x, 8x, and 12x on Nero alone without any problems. After updating the firmware, my write speed has gone up all the way to 48x. I'm still not sure if this has solved my problem. The media that I'm currently using is Philips, Memorex, and Maxell. Philips and Memorex are +R while Maxell is -R. My drive is able to read and write on both. I'll give it another try on Saturday when one of my import dvds arrives and this time I'll save my log if anything goes wrong.

without reading any further into your problems, i can tell you RIGHT NOW that the MEDIA might be the culprit...

you basically just touted off 2 of the WORST/most UNRELIABLE brands in dvd media...Philips and Memorex, you COULD be just fine with the Maxells, but, the first 2 brands...YUCK~!

Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB MXL RG03.... 8x (very good stuff, i use it myself)

Maxell DVD-R 4.7GB RITEKG05.... 8x (good stuff again, got 500+ of these flawless backups)

so, there is a GOOD chance you are using the crap Philips/Memorex discs and THAT is where the problems begin...

the Maxells you have SHOULD be just fine, but with your DVD+R choices...go with Fuji (made in japan) and Sony (made in japan) BOTH of these are YUDEN000T02 coded which are Taiyo Yuden, one of "the" best you can get locally~ :)

good luck~

p.s.

Philips DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.E01 8x (crap)
Philips DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.F01 4x (crap)
Philips DVD+R 4.7GB INFOME..R20 8x (crap again)
Philips DVD+R 4.7GB MBIPG101R04 8x (need i continue with crap?)
Philips DVD+R 4.7GB Philips.081 8x (philips SUCKS)
Philips DVD+R 4.7GB PHILIPS.C08 8x (the sucking continues)
Philips DVD+R 4.7GB PHILIPS.C16 16x (wow, sucks x2)

now onto Memosux

Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.E01 8x (crap)
Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.F01 4x (crap again)
Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB CMC MAG.M01 16x (crap x2)
Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB MBIPG101R03 4x (cough crap)
Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB MBIPG101R04 8x (see above comment)
Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB PHILIPS.C08 8x (wow, 2 crappy combined)
Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB PHILIPS.C16 16x (quadruple crap)
Memorex DVD+R 4.7GB PRODISC.R03 8x (while slightly better, eh)

ok i'll stop, you get the general idea...i basically had some free time so i thought i would save you the trouble on identifying CRAP media~ :) there you go...

This seems more likely a media issue. As much as I hate to repeat myself, but in this case...I'm not a big fan of Memosux (especially CMC MAG) and Philips. Your Maxell is decent, however, I would recommend and prefer the Maxell DVD+R "Made In Japan" only. Other than that, I won't even want to waste my money on them. High quality media are genuine Taiyo Yuden (also the Fuji and Sony DVD+R "Made In Japan" only), Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004), Maxell DVD+R "Made In Japan" and the Ritek.

If you have Nero Burning Rom, then I highly recommend you to use it. That is one great engine for burning. In addition, you can change the speeds to 4X in prior to the actual burning process takes place.

NOTE: if you want to go a little faster, then try 6X but never go beyond 8X, it is recommend that 4X is the best and safest.

Thanks for the load of info guys. Now my burner is back to normal now after I used Maxell. Now I will stir clear away from Memorex and Philips. How is Imation? I never really tried that brand out but I'm guessin that brand is not that good either. I don't really use memorex for movie back ups. Its just for my mom's karoake dvds back ups. The philips one I just got them for free. Now I will stick with Maxell or Fuji if I can find it. Thanks again guys. If I run to anymore problems like this then I'll just refer back to this post.

Actually it's out in Japan already I believed - someone correct me if I'm wrong though. Yeah... I love that movie, it's super tri good if you asked me. My nephew got it on DivX from the net 7 days ago, and I have VSO DivXtoDVD convert it for me. It's amazing, especially on my 55" Sony HDTV Hi-Scan 1080 -- all I can say is that there's tons of actions from the start until the end.

Absolutely.... that crap media list is good, especially for newbies to learn. See you around Doc.

You're welcome... and YES please use high quality media for your next dvd burning (and or future burning). Like I mentioned earlier, genuine Yuden is super good, next is Verbatim (MCC003 & MCC004) and Maxell or Ritek. You shouldn't have any problem with these high quality media, and if you value your backup copies such as quality and its longevity, then please use them top notch media I've stated.

Yes.... but then again, you'll need high quality media as well and keep in mind to set your "custom size" on DVD Shrink to "4360MB" to avoid from writing too close to the edges. Also "delete" any unwanted "subtitles, foreign languages or extra etc."

Oh and I forgot to say that Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is beautifully awesome. You'll definitely enjoy tons of actions from the start until the end, not only that but both graphics and actions are spectacular.
