Can't figure it out DV help

I've tried everything, so hopefully someone can help, I have a Canon XL1s camcorder, on Windows XP. I can't seem to get any of the programs I have to capture my footage. I know my card is IEEE compatible. I have tried other wires, and also tried it in another computer. I don't know why it is not working. I always get the error failure to connect to device or something along those lines whatever the different programs say. I dunno if this helps but my computer recognizes it when i plug it on or turn in on connected, but none of my programs. thanks if you can help
