After backing up Gangs of New York in Shrink, during the course of the movie I have occasional subs popping up when an important (to the plot) English language sign or newspaper headline appears.
I presume this is the 'Forced Subpicture'?
In future, can I turn this off without causing problems?

I had selected that option, but the subpicture is still presented in the main screen.
I uploaded a snapshot.

Don't know why it is present unless it is already a movie that you had previouosly analyzed. Just uncheck it, and uncheck the DC unless you want those to run through the movie as a lot of players will default to them.

When I backup movies, I usually just keep the AC3 5.1-ch English audio track (DTS also if I'm backing up main movie only and it doesn't take up too much space) and English subpicture. I usually uncheck the rest. I never listen to Director's commentary tracks, so I don't waste space on the backup by leaving it on there. I always uncheck forced subpictures.
attar, Gangs of New York is a great movie. You may be able to put the entire movie onto 1 disc. Just use reauthor in DVD Shrink. You'll lose quality, but it shouldn't be that bad. I backed up Pearl Harbor and was able to fit the main movie onto 1 disc. I wasn't able to keep the DTS audio track, but I was able to keep the 5.1 audio track. It looks pretty good.

DTS can take up quite a bit of space, and you only can use it if you have a DTS system otherwise it will not play. If you don't it is better to lose it, my two cents.

I agree, but I have a surround sound system that has a DTS decoder and it sounds awesome! I only do DTS when I'm backing up just the main movie unless the compression is really low, then I'll just pick the 5.1 audio track.
