God help me - making a vcd with subs

just downloaded this 700MB movie in .avi format recently that came with subs, not knowing anything about making a vcd with subs to play on a dvd-player i looked up several sites and tried the following -

1) use VobSub then WinAVI converter and lastly burn with Nero

- VobSub did not work as i expected, i tried using SubMux but the .avi file it made was a 1sec clip ... so that didn't work

so next i tried -

2) Converting my .srt subtitle file into a .ssa file

3) use VirtualDub and VirtualDub Subtitle filter, after loading the movie and the subtitles, i used TMPGEnc to encode the entire thing into a 1.3GB .mpeg2 file

4) after installing Elecard's MPEG2 codec i was able to view the movie perfectly with subs and WMP

5) finally i used MPEG splitter and splitted the file into 2 680MB files to burn into CD-Rs

since i didn't have Nero at this point i tried using WinXP's innate burning ability to burn the MPEG2 file directly into a CD-R and tried viewing it with my Pioneer DV-355 DVD-player (it plays CD-Rs and it does read VCD, SVCD formats) - that didn't work

so what i tried next is to burn using this program Blaze Media Pro into a MPEG2 format video cd, that didn't work too

finally i tried converting the format from MPEG2 back to MPEG1 VCD format using the same program, then finally into a CD with the exact same format, it also didn't work

all in all i tried for about 6 hours but i couldn't get the darn thing to work, all 3 tries the DVD player said it can't read the disc -_- so ... any suggestions???
