Already backed up games, now want online play

I'm new to all of this, so bear with me if this doesnt make any sense. I have installed the hdd loader and have a few games backed up on a hard drive in my ps2. Everything works fine. Now I have a high speed connection and want to play these games online. I understand there are patches so that I can do this, but I'm not sure how to use the patches. All the tutorials I read give directions on using patches before the games are installed on the hdd. Will I be able to install the patches and play my backed up games online without having to re-install them (the games) on my ps2's hdd?

Are you sure? Because my friend that helped my to get the hdd loader working said it was possible. Oh well.

What if I used Xlink Kai? Ive used it for my xbox, but I havent tried backed up games, I just use it to avoid spending money on Live. And I prefer xbconnect.
