Have some basic questions. I was just browsing on here and I do have a dvd+r burner. I got the computer with the top of the line dvd burner that DELL provided in september of 04. I believe it is a 16Xburner? Does anyone have this same burner and would know if it is a dual layer burner? The only thing I could find on it is when I went to the properties of it is this "_NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A" If anyone could tell me if its a dual layer, I would much appreciate it.

Next, I got the dvd x platinum back up software. I got it last december. I believe there are updates, in which I went to the correct forum to ask for. I know Platinum supports dual layer dvd. I am trying to update my stuff because my coppies of some dvds just plain suck. I'm probably using shitty dvd cds which are memorex. Could anyone give me the top of the line brands of cd dvds to use? Also if my burner is not dual layer could someone tell me a good/cheap burner that is?

Last, Is platinum the best program to use? is that One click program better? I'd like to be up to date with my stuff, so if anyone could help me I would greatly apprecaite it. Thanks

No it isnt a DL burrner.

dvd x platinum Sucks! They dont even update it anymore and I think are out of buisness.

DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink are good free programs. You can download both at the top of the forum under software.

NERO recode 2 is a good program.

AnyDVD with Clone DVD is good you can buy them at http://www.slysoft.com.

DVDFab is a pretty good 1 click program.

As of media always use good quility media and burn no faster then 4x

Below is a link of a thread where people talk about the media they use.

as far as media use Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim ,memorex is some of the WORST blank media on the market. heres some links and guides to use the programs mentioned.

1) Your burner does plus format/single layer only.My dad and a buddy have the same nec 1100a DVD-RW drive.Excellent burner. We have no issues when it comes to re-ripping each others backups. We do use quality media. Cmags and moser bauer do not work very good in the 1100A.

2-A)Ditch the x-copy and crappy media media.Try maxell +4x /+8x/verbatim data life plus +4x/Verbatim digital movie quality +4x/and sony +1x-8x.Both my dad and buddy have no trouble with those brands.

2-B) Benq 1620/1625/1640: Dual layer/dual format-1625 has the lightscribe/best of all: Bitsetting. These backups can be booktyped using the plus format media and turned into dvd-roms making your backups play in more stand alones/game consoles/and pc drives. They must be pretty good if plextor and some other major brands are using benqs and selling them under their name! I can vouch for how good they are,I have 2 1620s that burn over 99% success rate and 95%+ compatability on stand alones and other dvd drives!

3)It's hard telling what the best software is.Seems like majority of software has issues with the newer encryptions. DVD Shrink, AnyDVD and nero6 work near perfection for me on the majority of backups on my main pc.My backup, single drive pc doesn't care for that setup.DVD Decrypter using ISO read and write works out the best. You still have to download a different program every once in a while, look at all the lords of dogtown threads, LOL. AnyDVD by slysoft works with nero/dvd shrink/and DVD Decrypter along with just about any burn software out there. It runs in the background so no extra step is involved. It's also updated very regularly.I use AnyDVD and nero6 for ripping and burning dvds and cds on the fly. It's always good to have several different ripping and burning options for when trouble arrises, and it usually does.

For those non compressed backups,I love DVD Decrypter using Mode ISO read and Mode ISO write on my single DVD-RW drive pc.I do flirt with on the fly using AnyDVD and Nero using my dual dvd drive.

You want the software that performs well, and you want to be comfortable with them. Each pc is different because of the different processor speeds and ram.

Even 1 click dvd has its troubles with the newer encryptions.I've got a buddy who loves it.But he's always adding patches on problematic encryptions for dvd/x-box/and ps2 backups.

OK first off, sorry for sounding so illeterate with this stuff. Next, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

What I need to go do is go get a different burner. I'll probably go get that benq 1625 (you say its the best of the benq brand). I dont really want to go research more for 2 important reasons. One, my ass is lazy, lol , and two well i did a little research just on here and Ive seen alot of people say its a good burner. Well goo enough for me! Next, where should I go order this burner? preferrably the cheapest?\

Next, I dont quite get all these programs you guys talk about on here. But I did go download a few of them that seemed to be most talked about on here. I couldnt get the Nero 6 download to work. DO I need to purchase it? I got the shrink dowload. Also I got a BIt tornado program. On top of that I have the DVD X copy platinum (which im a little discourage to find out that everyone says it sucks) but anyhow, do I need another actual burning program and all of these programs like shrink and Nero 6 are just like patches to help me burn dvds? I know these are absolutly retarded questions but I would really like just some help.

Last, where do you guys go buy your dvd's? I am going to go get a dual layer dvd drive, where would I order some good dvds to burn? (preferably a website with some good quality dvds and not too bad price). Thanks guys for the help.

OK so I've downloaded all the programs that was listed in the previous message. I should have all the stuff I may need to make the best quality backups that are possible correct? Well beside the obvious, a burner in which im ordering at the moment and good dvds to write on. Is this all the software I may need? thanks..

Here's one of the best sites to get most anything pc related:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101637

That's the ben1 1625,not sure if it is the best benq, but it does have light scribe if that is what you desire. The 1640 has some excellent features and is about $44 bucks including fed ex.

Some of these benqs come with nero6 oem and that is an excellent burn software. It came with both my benqs.Just read the articles about the benqs at the link at newegg.com. It tells you what comes bundled with them,if they have any left. When you get Nero, make sure you leave out the INCD packet.

Good DVDS?
Whatever the good stuff that is on sale. Last 2 weeks it was the fuji taiyo yudens at staples. This week,it's the sony taiyo yudens again at staples. Make sure you try the plus format to start with.Beware of TDK/MEMOSUX/PHILLIPS.My benqs love anything you throw in them, just keep a sensible 4x burn speed to start with.Look those labels over for Made in Japan on the sony/fuji/and maxells!

Buying on the net,get the plus taiyo yuden +8x at rima, supermediastore, meritline, and americal.com
Also verbatim data life plus +8x are sweet. Both verb and ty have metal azo dye for some of the best media in the world.

Software to start:
Dvd shrink, you have to have this to compress, but it also rips.It does have problems with the newer sony arccos encryption-but AnyDVD usually takes care of it.DVD Shrink is no longer updated, but still valuable.

Nero6, Your burner should come with an oem version and it automatically burns with DVD Shrink once you set it up.

Dvd decrypter: More powerful ripper, faster than DVD Shrink using ISO read and ISO write, but cannot compress.
2 modes for dvd decrypter: File mode is for the large DVD-9 movies,so DVD Shrink has to compress.
ISO mode, non compressed program for a 1:1 copy. DVD-9 to DVD-9 or DVD5-DVD-5.One of the best programs for dual layer backups.

Dvd decrypter is no longer updated, but AnyDVD should take care of the newer encryptions.

You don't need the benq DW1625 unless you want a lightscribe drive. I would recommend the DW1640 instead.

The software that was recommended will not give you the best quality possible but DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are free. There is other retail software available that will produce better results but I would start with DVD Shrink untill you have mastered it.

Newegg.com has the best prices and service for drives and other pc hardware. Some good online stores to buy media are supermediastore.com, rima.com, newegg.com, and merritline.com

bp11139,

Here's a pretty good review of the BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer,

http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/226

And if you decide to purchase it, newegg.com has it for $42.99 shipped. I recently purchased it, and have already burnt 6 disks, successfully.

If you decide to purchase this burner, only buy +R disks so it will booktype it to DVD-ROM, by default.

HTH,

Rich

I'd try the Plus rws to start with. Once you get the process down, then try some quality plus r's.

Once you get the hang of it even better, then you can go for the full gusto with quality +R DLS.You may ruin a few discs when you start,so the RWS will take care of that.Lightscribe media is also up there in price compared to the regular DVD-5 blanks.

Single layer or Dual layer blank media?

Depends on what you want to back up.If you want to keep all those bonus features of the DVD-9 movies and the cost of dl media in insignificant, then DL would be the way to go.

If you just want main movie only with none of the bonus crap, then sindle layer.Quite a few movies out there are only DVD-5 so you can get a 1:1 copy using single layer.

With those 2 sizes of movies, you'll probably want to use both +r and +r dual layer. No sense in wasting a dual layer for a 4.3 gig movie!

Just make sure it is quality media. Lots of different brands with different MID codes on media.Stick with the good MID codes and your standalones will thank you for them.

BTW: A blank DVD-5 only hold approx 4.38 gigs of data. Not 4.7 gigs like the labels state. You lose some of those bytes after all the conversions. A blank DVD-9 dual layer will only hold about 8.5 gigs.
