I have a book that holds approx 256 DVDs. I have been storing it horizontally with other books stacked on top of it. Now, I have playback issues. Could it be the weight of all the discs that has ruined them? The discs appear to be in perfect condition. No scratches at all, no fingerprints, no nothing. They never come out of the books unless they are being played, and then they go right back into their spot in the book.

Some details:

I have only Ritek media. All are either G04s or G05s. All were burned at the speed ratings of the discs themselves (4x for the G04s and 8x for the G05s). All were burned with NEC drives (1300A, 2500A, and 3520A).

I have been backing up my discs for approx 2 years and would never have thought that I would already have playback issues. I thought it might be my DVD player going out as it is about 5 years old, but we went and bought a new one and got the exact same results (if not worse). I really wouldn't have thought that the weight would be a factor after such a short amount of time.

As a side note, I took one of my discs that would lock up on the stand alone player, and copied its contents back to the HDD of the computer with no issues.

Any help?

Man... this is all screwed up. I just checked some other discs that I burned recently that have had no weight on them. They are freezing up too in spots. Not quite as bad as the other ones, but still doing the same thing. This is on two different stand alone DVD players (one of which is brand new).

The only other thing I can think of that has changed is that we lost power for 4 days with the Katrina event, and the temps in the house were about 80-85F. Could storing them in those temps for a few days mess them up?

Weight could possibly play a roll in bad playbacks... But if you are now finding properly stored discs to not be working, Im going to question your burning methods... Have you viewed these copies after burning? Or are you assuming them to be valid burns, and just storing.?

At the moment, Ive avoided storing my dvdr's in albums until I can find some valid info on whether or not weight affects durability... When I do switch to albums (which seems inevitable do to me running out of room) Ill surely store the albums upright...
