I have used DVDShrink to make a back-up copy of Hero to a DVD+R Double Layer (Memorex brand disc). In DVDShrink I specified DVD+R DL as the output type, selected ?no compression?, and the burn appeared to complete successfully without errors. The problem is, the back-up DVD will not play on the burner used to create it or on my Panasonic set-top DVD player. I have used DVDShrink successfully to burn many DVD-R single layer discs on the same Lite-On SOHW1673S burner and they all play perfectly on the burner as well as the Panasonic set-top DVD player. I have also used DVD Decrypter to rip all the files to the hard disk and then burned a back-up DVD+R Double Layer using the latest version of Nero Recoder2. The back-up DVD+R DL discs again appear to burn successfully, but will not play (can not be read by) on either the Lite-On burner that created them or the Panasonic set-top DVD player.

Any suggestions/ideas as to why the discs won?t play and how to burn discs that will play would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah a couple suggestions.

First try using Decrypter instead of Shrink it handels the layer break much better heres a quick easy guide http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/Copying%20a%20Dual%20Layer%20DVD%...

Second get better quality media. Verbatim probably makes the best DL disks right now.

Cheers

@bbmayo .... Thanks VERY much bbmayo for your advice to this newbie, and for posting it so quickly. I will give it a try a little later today. For now I will have to try with the memorex DVD+R double layers i have (i think they're really Ritek discs labeled for memorex).

Question: i was looking at the ISO Read and ISO Write settings tabs in DVD Decrypter (version 3.5.4.0) and would like to know if you think it would be a good idea/safe to check all of the 'remove' IFO and VOB options on the ISO Read Mode settings tab. Also, would you recommend checking any of the boxes in the ISO Write Mode settings tab that are not by default checked?

Also wondering why you think it is that ripping the entire contents of my DVD-9 disc with DVD Decrypter using file mode and then burning with Nero Recode2 produces a disc that appears to have burned successfully but still does not play, not even on the drive that burned it?

many thanks again!

@bustertin, bbmayo's guides are awe-some and I have used pretty much every form of DL burning program and I have to say that Decrypter in ISO read then write is hard to beat, matter-of-fact I use that when making a backup of a movie that fits on a single layer. Simple, fast and flawless. I would suggest to switch DL media..I used Memorex and had problems, switched to Verbatim and never looked back...play flawless even in the Denon 2200 which can be very picky. Just my thoughts have fun burning.

Another suggestion to increase compatability of your DVD+R DL media is to booktype them to dvd-rom. It can be done with DVD Decrypter but I recommend useing the lite-on booktype utility. You can find a link to it and a link to a usage guide here http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441

@mort81, great suggestion, ya' know I have found that, at least with the Denon, that -DL works better than the plus...everything works great on the Sony's but the Denon is picky so that's a challenge, yet I have watched many back-ups of Dl (Verbs) and they never have a problem and the menus work flawlessly. Have a good night friend.

@MovieDud, thanks for the advice. yep, bbmayo's guides are great. just had a read. will give an ISO read/write a try. only have the memorex DVD+R DLs now, so will try with those. the only double layer discs my burner (Lite-On SOHW 1673S external) is capable of burning are DVD+R DLs, so i'll have to go with +. so far, i've burned many -R single layer discs with dvdshrink and they've all worked just fine.

@Mort81, thanks also for your advice. Does the change booktype feature in DVD Decrypter work well? There is a Lite-On tab in that setting feature. Is there any reason NOT to tell DVD Decrypter to burn a DVD+R DL as DVD-ROM? From what I can tell, burning as booktype DVD-ROM is a good idea to increase compatibility.

bustertin,

I have answered some of your questions in a PM you sent me, but the booktyping is the best idea if your burner is capable. A DVD ROM is what the movie manufacturers use. So if you booktype you are basically tricking your player into thinking your disk is a DVD ROM instead of a - or + so you see this type of disk should play virtualy in any player you stick it in. The only catch with doing booktyping in DVD Decrypter is knowing wich setting to use and this is a bit tricky depending on your drive. Just because you have a LiteON for instance doesn't mean by choosing the LiteON setting will produce a DVD ROM disk. To bad the DVD Decrypter sight went down because it was all explained in the forum there. I wish I would have copied and pasted that :-( I believe at one time when I had a LiteON burner for instance I had to use the NEC setting for mine to work properly for booktyping. Maybe someone around here or on the net would have the right setting for your writer? It might take a little research.

Cheers

bustertin,

Your SOHW-1673S is a true lite-on drive and you should be able to use dvdd with the lite-on tab or the lite-on booktype utility to bitset. Like I mentioned previously, I prefer the booktype utility, set it to booktype DVD+R to dvd-rom once and it will do so untill/unless you set it back to DVD+R. It stores the setting in the eeprom or memory of the drive.

@bbmayo,
@mort81,

OK, I followed the excellent advice in bbmayo's guide exactly, using DVD Decrypter in ISO mode to read and then write a commercial DVD to a Memorex (Ritek) DVD+R Double Layer. I also made sure to use DVD Decrypter to change to booktype to DVD-ROM before starting the process. The rip and burn processed successfully and the good news is that it produced a DVD-ROM booktype (verified booktype with DVD Identifier) that plays just fine on my one year old set top Panasonic DVD-S27 player.

Here?s the freaky thing - the disc can not be read by, let alone play on, the Lite-On SHOW 1673S that burned it!!! For the record, the Lite-On burner was flashed last week with the latest Lite-On firmware.

Any idea what could cause the burner that created the disk to be unable to read the disc it burned? Not only will the disk not play in the Lite-On burner that created it, but when I place the disk in the Lite-On and close the tray, the drive?s green LED just blinks indefinitely. The disk contents can?t even be viewed in WinXP file manager as WinXP doesn?t even seem to be aware that there is a disk in the drive.. Seems very odd to me. Any ideas?

Yeah try buying some verbatim's next time. Your drive probably just dosen't like those Memorex disk's or Ritek neither one is known to be very good DL media.

tried another burn of the same movie using another blank from that pack of memorex DVD+R DLs, but this time forced DVD Decrypter to burn at 2.4x, the rated burn speed printed on the discs. In the previous burns, DVD Decrypter was set to burn at MAX, and burned at 4x. The result ... the disc burned at 2.4x reads and plays fine in the Lite-On drive that burned it, and also plays fine on the Panasonic set top DVD player. So maybe that's the trick???

The last issue i'm aware of at this time with the Lite-On drive is that it reads/plays CD-Rs that were burned on other drives (mine and a buddy's), but it won't recognize or allow blank CD-Rs, even though they work fine with the internal CD-RW on the same machine. THe error message "Drive not accessible, incorrect function" is displayed when i try to write to a blank CD-R on that drive. I realize this is a DVD-based site, but hoping someone here might have a sulution to suggest. Thanks in advance.
