Does any one know when Nero will be releasing their MPEG2 Plugin and is there any other burning software that supports SVCD/MPEG2.Thanks for any advice.

You should encode your ("AVI") video clips with normal encoder to MPEG-2 first and then use Nero to burn them to CD -- this way the quality is _much_ better than using any bundled encoders. Go for TMPGEnc with encoding.

You should also try VCDImager:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/vcdimager.cfm

...it creates VCD/SuperVCD images from your MPEG-1/-2 files and then you can use your favourite CD burning tool to burn those images to blank CD.

Thanks for your help mate but Im still having probs with the MPEG 2 Plugin. When I encode my files to MPEG 2 with TMPEG I go to Nero to burn the file as a SVCD but a message pops up saying that I need the MPEG 2 Plugin at Neros webpage. But at the web page it now says the Plugin wont be available till the 21st September 2001. .The version I purchased (its not a demo)is the 5.0 but have updated it to the 5.5.4.0.Once again thanks for any suggestions.

In that case, use VCDImager just like I suggested -- you should get an .ISO CD image out of that -- just open that image file with Nero and burn it (you don't need any freaking plugins for that, as the Nero doesn't even know what the hell it is burning when it burns an ISO file).

I purchased and installed the mpeg2 encoder from nero.
I needed it because I get mpeg2 that I didn'y encode and nero say I need it re-encode them. Problem is that nero's encoder sucks. the video's look great on windvd in svcd format but after I re-encode then with nero they look terible.

Any body has any idea's?

You wasted your money. Re-encoding produces horrible results always, whatever the encoder -- and TMPGEnc's encoding routines are better anyway.

One thing that works for 30-40% of MPEG-1/2 videos you D/L from the Net is to use TMPGEnc. Select MPEG Tools and Demux the video (=it splits it into separate audio and video files) and then mux it back to one file using SVCD selection. This fixes the files that have wrong file structure (can't do anything for those that have incorrect video size or framerate). And this method doesn't lower the quality, it just restructures the file -- doesn't re-encode it.

I have 2 agree with dRD on this one, I was that sorry sod that was taken in by Nero's extra money making ploy and paid the 16 bucks for a svcd encoder that was crap! Also I have been capturing video with Hauppauge WinTV PVR Pci card in what hauppauge would have everyone believing as the SCVD mode (in there bundled software) which is also a lot of crap and after way to many emails to there support guys I finally got them to admit that, 'hey OK, SVCD or VCD mode doesn't really encode the files in that way you still need an external encoder to convert them'. Why have it there if if doesn't do what it says but it tells you on the box before you buy the damn thing that it can....- Just in case anyone else has came across this one....ok I'll get of my soap box and take a pill!......

karma69 -
Im with you, on this one.
Hauppauge's WinTV PVR Pci is a useless piece of sh1t. It clearly states capture vids, and burn them directly to vcd / svcd, which to me implies that: It can natively record in vcd / svcd compliant file formats... my arse it does.
What makes it any different from recording plain AVI's using a £30 card, when you still have to convert the damn thing before you can burn it to (s)vcd. Stay up on that soap box and scream as loud as you like, I think Hauppage are a pack of lying c*nts.

I'm trying to burn a VCD for use in my DVD player (a LG 3200E by the way). I'm using TMPGEnc to encode my .avi files into MPEG-2, then I use VCDimager to create (tried vcd 1.1, vcd 2.0 and svcd) my .bin files. Then use Nero 5.5 to burn onto cd. But after having wasted tons of cd's still dont work in my player. Does anyone have any suggestions???

nuttercjd: Are you sure your player supports VCDs? Try your VCDs with some of your friends' DVD players and if it works ok for them, you can be pretty sure your player doesn't support CD-Rs and CD-RWs.

I want to burn vcd1.1 not vcd2.0.. can I use an older version of nero for it or can nero 5.5.7.8 be manipulated to do so (not vcd2.0)
My old and cheap stand-alone vcd-player can only handle vcd1.1 ;)
