When I rip a movie to my C drive (and this is a movie is already burned aka not encrypted) with DVD decrypter, I can usually get at least 3.0X read spead, which is still nothing to brag about. However, when I rip to my accessory 80GB Western Digital drive, I can usually only get 1.0X read speed, and on top of that, my computer slows down (I think processor is working a lot harder). Has this happened to anyone? Maybe an information bottleneck when ripping to the slave HDD? I know HDD speeds vary, but not by this much, and this HDD is only maybe 3-4 years old. It does overall seem kind of slow (transferring files between C and G drives), and I wonder why.

Make sure both of your hard drives are set to DMA mode NOT PIO. Im not going into detail on how to do this. Search this form for instructions on setting hard drives to DMA mode it's been discussed may times. I'll bet that will fix your slow rips and transfer speeds between drives. Generally ripping already burned dvd's runs a bit slower than bought media D9 (dual Layer). 3X may be about right for your drive and PC specs. I usually average about 5X on D5 media (single layer). single layer pressed media (Store bought) runs abought 12X.

Good Luck

WOW! Thanks!...my second drive was definitely PIO, and I'm not sure how long this has been messed up in the wrong mode...I assumed the relatively modern BIOS had set things right...it had "secondary IDE channel slave" set to off, and I just switched it to AUTO...windows, for that channel and location, said DMA if available, but current mode was PIO...both drives doing DMA now so I'm happy.
