XviD in Quicktime 7

I have windows XP and wish to play some XviD AVIs in Quicktime. Can anyone help me with getting some sort of codec or something for quicktime to read XviDs. Any other codecs would be great, like some for MPEGs, cause my QT doesnt even read all MPEGS...

3ivX's QT plugin can decode XviD. QT should support mpg's as long as they are MPEG-1. There is an MPEG-2 plugin, however it is not free.

My advice would be just not to use QT.

the whole reason i need to play XviDs and others in QT is so I can use the export feature to convert them to an other format for the upcoming iPod with video. Its a type of MPEG4 .m4v i believe, 700kbps H.264 w/ 128kbps AAC audio

I guess I know why they picked m4v for the extension since they already use m4a for audio, but the fact is that m4v is already in use for raw MPEG-4 streams so it is now somewhat confusing. Why not just use mp4?

Anyway, you don't need to use Quicktime since there are other, better AVC encoders. You just have to remember to stick with baseline only features since that is all the ipod supports. I am sure that Ahead will eventually introduce ipod profiles into Nero recode to make it easier.

but Nero only takes DVD's and encodes them. I couldn't get it to encode a AVI file as input.

Takes anything that it can render via dshow. That's why the option is called "Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital".

avi's as a source aren't a problem.

People aren't seriously considering buying a video ipod are they? It has a battery life of only 2-3 hours, a tiny screen and only supports base profile AVC.
